"Right, the beginning..."

{The next several chapters will take place in the past. I'll let you know when it's back to normal.}

{Jack's POV}

Fuck...

That's all I could think.

I'd managed to get some people out, but my energy was fading fast. Tessa, N, V, and J were safe. They were the main priority. I couldn't get anyone else. After dragging myself through the mansion and to and from my home, it was a wonder I was still standing.

I'd deactivated the bots, until I could get them back to normal. N seemed to be okay, but he was still deactivated, just in case. A few people had managed to escape from the mansion, but only a few. Everyone else was presumed dead.

Tessa wasn't doing too well after witnessing the massacre. She was shaking, curled into a ball in my room. I left the bots deactivated and tried to comfort her, not daring to use the solver. I was sitting across the room. When I teleported her here, she nearly killed me when I touched her. When I went for N and V, I had to stop N from getting killed by the solver. I tore it apart. V and N asked to be deactivated as a precaution. I didn't have a choice with J.

And Cyn. Oh Cyn. How long had that thing been waiting? How much pain were you in? Why didn't you tell me? That's a stupid question. You couldn't have told me. It would have been able to kill you and jump to another host long before I could have saved you.

An EAS warning blared over my radio, warning everyone to barricade themselves indoors and stay away from all A.I. Not surprising. I made sure the radio was tuned to catch any more announcements. My phone buzzed, notifying me about a call. I answered.

"Jack Messorem. Who am I speaking to?"

"JCJenson head of R&D. What the hell is going on?!"

"Solver A.I. went rouge. Keep a very close eye on any drones running the program. Preferably securely contained."

"WHAT!?? Then the gala, what happened?"

"As far as I know, every attendee except for me and Tessa Elliot is dead."

"Shit. From what I've heard, the millitary is moving in to secure the area. They don't know what's happening. Or what they're up against."

"There's nothing we can do except wait. Make sure you're listening to any EAS broadcasts."

"Yeah, will do. Fuck.."

"That describes the situation pretty well."

The call was ended. I placed my phone on my desk and looked at the still shaking Tessa.

"It's gonna be okay Tess. Everything's going to be okay."

The shaking subsided slightly. She looked at me, and I smiled at her, offering a hand. She took it and hugged my arm, calming down enough for her to sleep.

She didn't do anything to deserve this.

I didn't sleep that night. Somehow Tessa wasn't awoken by any nightmares, but maybe there was some good luck left in her. I was used to sleepless nights by now, so I wasn't too worried about being affected by it. I expect plenty of calls about the solver and what we should do and other shit.

People have questions, and unfortunately no one truly has complete answers. I should leave JCJenson to clean up the mess. They bought the solver. I had no control over what they did with it. I knew that wouldn't work out. People need someone to blame, and they're going to blame me. After all, I made it.
