Newborn and Declaration

I moved to step forward but Jasper held me back as we looked at each other and I nodded. Jasper then looked back to Bella "vampires live differently in the South. Where their lives are measured by weeks and not centuries, only coming out at night and fighting each other for control of territories with larger human populations so that they won't have any competition in feeding."

Rosalie and Emmett immediately moved to stand with us as Jasper told his story. "There was a young vampire named Benito that began using armies of wild, uncontrolled newborns to dispatch rival covens. The only problem was that these newborns destroyed each other as often as their targets, and had to be replaced frequently. The other covens then had to form their own newborn armies to counter Benito. The human population became so drastically reduced during the fighting, that eventually, the Volturi stepped in. The entire Volturi guard came from Italy and annihilated all the vampires found with newborns, virtually emptying the region of vampires for a time. The ones that survived began to stake claims again and the fighting resumed, though on a smaller scale. Newborn armies were again utilized but with more care and control this time to avoid additional Volturi involvement."

I felt Jasper squeeze my hand as he began the next part. "I became a Confederate soldier in Houston when I was 16 years old by lying about my age and claiming to be 20. By the time of the first battle of Galveston, I was made the youngest major in Texas at the age of 20. My orders were to convey the women and children from Galveston to Houston to avoid Union mortar boats. It was then I met three vampire women: Maria, Nettie, and Lucy, all survivors of recently lost battles. Maria, a petite brunette and their leader sensed that I was special and turned me rather than kill me. Maria wanted to reclaim her territory, and built a newborn army, putting me in charge of the others. My ability to control the emotions of those around me enabled me to build a large, lethal group of newborns that could work together. I lived this life for decades, training, fighting with, and then disposing of the newborns. As the years wore on, the violence and hate took their toll on me, but Maria had told me that there was no other way."

Jasper stopped and took a breath gathering his wit again as I encouraged him to keep going. "Eventually, a newborn named Peter proved so useful that he was put in charge of watching over the others. When another newborn named Charlotte was about to be killed Peter saved her and both ran away. Five years later, Peter came back to tell me of a better life with no warring; a life outside of the South. I left Maria for this new life without a second thought, but as I continued to kill people for food, my depression grew. Unlike Peter and Charlotte, I could feel the horror and fear of each kill, thanks to my gift, and was reminded of my last night as a human. I left my friend after a while to live on my own. I tried not to feed but had to eventually, fueling my depression and shame."

He then looked at Alice and Ben "then I got the chance of a lifetime, in Philadelphia, I entered a diner to get out of the rain and met Alice and Ben for the first time. They were waiting for me; Alice had "seen" me. She told me of the Cullens, whom she had also "seen", and the possibility of a life without all the killing."

After Jasper finished his tale, I could see the others coming to the acceptance that this was indeed a newborn army. Edward then spoke, "we must be the target as we are the largest coven." I could tell that Edward was about to say something weird "Aro is jealous and fearful of Carlisle, this must be their doing." 

All of us looked at each other as Rosalie beat all of us to speaking up. "That is the dumbest idea I've ever heard. The Volturi would have absolutely no problem marching straight to us if they wanted to." 

Jasper nodded and immediately lent his support to his sister and dismissed the idea "no, a newborn army is too sloppy for the Volturi. It must be a first-timer."  

I suddenly had a bad feeling as I remembered someone who was certainly smart enough to do this. "Guys," they all looked at me. "I think I know who is creating this army." 

Emmett looked at me along with the others "who?" 

"The person who wants revenge for what we did to her," Edward shook his head but I didn't let him speak as I looked straight at Jasper. "The person who lost her soulmate to us." 

Jasper, Rosalie, Ben, and Emmett all seemed to realize where I was going with this as their eyes widened and all of them together spoke "Victoria." It was then decided that Jasper was going to train all of us but I could tell that he wasn't looking forward to the memories that training us would bring back.

We all stood in the living room with the TV playing in the background as I tried to shake the memories out of my head of the worst time in my life. It was horrible talking about it but it helped to have Sebastian, Rosalie, and Emmett next to me. 

I was brought back from my thoughts when the only human in the room spoke "wouldn't it be better if you used the week to turn me and then I'd be stronger." 

I saw Edward tense and knew immediately that wasn't what he wanted so Alice spoke up "you'd be more of a liability considering you would be just as uncontrollable." Edward nodded to Alice in thanks as I just rolled my eyes knowing that Edward did not want to turn her at all.
