Spencer walked back to his desk, avoiding eye contact with the team. Prentiss stood near the edge of his desk, much to his dismay. "So you're back with Y/N, huh?" He leaned back in his chair to and kicked his feet up. "Actually, we were never dating," he said. Morgan raised an eyebrow. "Kid, we all saw that kiss," he argued. "Morgan, don't you kiss people you aren't dating all the time?" JJ teased. Everyone laughed. Even Rossi was invested, making his way over to Spencer's desk. "She's a good fit for you Reid," he said. "What do you mean?"

"She keeps up with you in conversation. You can tell from how she holds herself that she can hold her own. That's good for you, you need a strong woman in your life." Spencer frowned. "That feels like a backhanded statement," he said. "It's not a bad thing, Spence," JJ said. He nodded, not fully convinced. "Also, she knows her wines. I like Y/N," Rossi said, then walked away. They all made sounds of surprise, then went back to talking about Y/N. Morgan was particularly interested, though Spencer knew it was because Morgan saw him as a little brother. "Seriously though kid, what do you mean you weren't together? I thought you were."

"It's complicated," Spencer said. "Why'd you guys hide it for so long?" Prentiss asked. "We agreed that it would be safer considering the fact that if we fail to catch someone there's a chance they'll target us by going after the people we love and Y/N said it was just easier." Everyone nodded. It made sense. He was lucky that his job wasn't putting a strain on their relationship the way it had Hotch's. "How long have you two known each other?" JJ asked. "Three years, four months and 9 days. She moved into the apartment next to mine. We didn't start talking until after she came back from the ward."

Spencer thought about the day Y/N moved in. He had been sitting outside his apartment reading one of his favorite books when she walked up, all bright eyed and bubbly. He had just joined the FBI and was buzzing with excitement. "Hi. I'm your new neighbor," she'd said. Spencer smiled politely. Was small talk really needed? "Hello. Nice to meet you. I'm Doctor Spencer Reid." Was he flexing his PhD's? Maybe. Did he care? No. "I'm Y/N L/N." She smiled and held out a hand. "I don't really do handshakes. You exchange more pathothegns shaking hands than you do kissing someone," he'd explained. "Oh. That's okay. I actually have to unpack now, so see you around!"

Her last name has sounded familiar, so Spencer went to do some digging. Apparently he'd heard it on the news a few years prior. He was slightly irked when he found out she got there after a prison sentence for assault. He also found it slightly ironic that he lived next to an ex-con right after joining the Bureau. After that, he'd been slightly wary of her ever since. He hadn't been able to trust her without the full story.

Now though, he would lay his life on the line for her.
