I was really grateful that Theo was able to tell Eric and Mom what was going on with me so I didn't have to. I was also grateful that they refrained from talking about it and were there to help me deal with how I was feeling. I didn't want to talk. I just wanted them to comfort me when I was really struggling through all the new changes.
Mom went home Sunday evening. She promised to come and visit me more so I wouldn't be as lonely. I knew Eric and Theo were there to help me, but seeing Mom made me feel a lot better. I was more comfortable with her, anyway.
I was nervous about my appointment with Dr. Simmons. It was just a check-up to see how I was doing but I knew there were some things we had to talk about with her. Who knew if that would change how the visit went or not?
Eric had to work so only Theo was able to go with me. I heard him and Eric talking about a list of things to discuss with Dr. Simmons. I already knew most of what Theo was going to tell her. I just hated that we even had to talk about it.
We waited in the waiting room for someone to call us back. The receptionist was printing and stapling papers to put into files. I found myself watching her as my heart raced.
"Jacob Williams?" I jumped as my name was called. A nurse in yellow scrubs stood in the doorway behind the receptionist's desk.
I pushed off the armrests of the chair I was sitting in and got to my feet. I made my way over to the nurse to follow him back to one of the rooms.
I recognized Nick from the first time I'd visited Dr. Simmon's. He gave me a smile as we approached him.
"It's good to see you again, Jacob."
"Yeah." I wasn't thrilled about being there. I didn't want to see the doctor and talk about everything that was wrong with me. I would've rather been anywhere else.
"We're going to the first room on the left. We'll get your height and weight before Dr. Simmons meets with you."
"You just got it the last time I was here," I pointed out.
He nodded. "Right. But it does change."
Maybe he was right. I stepped up onto the scale and stared down at the screen as the numbers moved before settling on 142.6.
"It looks like you've lost a few pounds since you were last here. Let's check your height."
If anything stayed the same, I thought it would have been my height. I stood straight and let him check my height.
"Five foot four. Looks like you lost two inches since you were last here."
I cringed at his wording but knew he wasn't aware of anything... else shrinking.
"We're going to go into the second room on the right." Nick led the way and we walked across the hall to the second room. It was a small exam room with a sink and counter on one side of the wall and chairs on the opposite. A table sat in the center of the room with a folded-up gown over the paper that covered the table itself. "Go ahead and change into the gown. Dr. Simmons will be right with you."
I grabbed the gown and glanced at Theo. He quickly picked up on what I was mentally saying but wouldn't say out loud.
"You can get changed in front of me."
I shook my head. "I don't even change in front of my mom."
"You know, we've both seen you naked before."
I groaned. "You sound just like her."
"Would it help you if I turned around?"
"No, but... I guess it's better than nothing." As Theo turned to face the wall and not me, I quickly changed out of my clothes and into the gown. I hated wearing it knowing that I was only in a diaper underneath. I felt so exposed.
