Maeve's POV

As I walked to the courtyard, I cradled my books in my arms. I was a little on edge because we would see the results of the midterm wizard's tests. I was hoping that I finally got the number one spot. I have been constantly getting the number two spot for the past 3 years since I have been at this school. This one guy has always beaten me. Simon Richards. I despise him with every fiber of my being. He was so good at Potions, Spell Casting, Broom Riding, Mage Conjuring, and everything else! Not to mention, he's good-looking. He's got that bad-boy nerd vibe going on. He has these thin-rimmed glasses, covering his bright, emerald green eyes, his hair was a curly mop bucket on the top of his head, he had some freckles, but his teeth were perfectly straight and his lips were plump and pink. Not to mention, he was athletic. For my sanity, I need to beat him.

"Hey, girly!" I turned to my left and saw my best friend, Lilyra. She was such a bright and beautiful soul. She might not be in the top five smartest witches but in the top 10. She had a head of blonde curls that flowed down her back, sky-blue eyes, pink lips, and a banging body to boot. She was also so outgoing and fun while I tended to stay in the dorm and do homework.

"Hey..." I greet. She stares at me for a moment and sighs.

"Worried about the midterm wizard's results?" I hate that I am so obvious.

"What if I don't get first place? All of my hard work will be down the drain!" I exclaim.

"Mae, you can't think like that. I know you have this vendetta against Simon but you are only young once. It's time to live life to its fullest potential." I roll my eyes.

"I can have fun when I'm dead. Right now, I need to finally get the satisfaction of beating Simon Richards. Nothing else matters." She now rolls her eyes at me.

"Fine. But once you realize that having fun is just as important as having a good grade, there is a party tonight at the boy's dormitory. I would implore you to come and have some fun. Come on, let's go see your name in lights." She kissed my cheek and headed for the courtyard. That's ridiculous. I can have fun whenever I want. I just don't want to.

We make it to the courtyard where we see a bunch of students gathered around the projection board. I quickly search for my name. I torture myself by starting at the end and making it to the front.

"Hey, I moved one more place this time around," Lilyra cheered.

"Aww, girl! That's awesome!" I tell her. She searched for my name with me and when I finally got to it, my heart was crushed. I was in 2nd place, again. Lilyra turned to me and rubbed my head. Damn it! I really thought I had it this time! I studied so hard that I didn't even hang out with Lilyra for months! I was so miserable but I knew it would be worth it when I got 1st place. She saw the look on my face and hugged me.

"Aww, sweetie. I'm sorry. But hey, you're still in the top five."

"Yeah, but it's not the top spot." I glare at the voice who decided to say some shit. Of course, it's Maxim Donogan, the best friend of Simon Richards.

"Oh, shut up, Donogan! You didn't even make it to the top five so get off everyone's dick, all right?" Lilyra snaps.

"I'd much rather have you on mine, baby." He winked at her and she rolled her eyes at him.

"Whatever, creep." He was about to say something but looked behind us.

"Hey, man! You are number one again! How does it feel to top Maeve Isley once again?!" We turned to see Simon right behind me. I hate how tall he is.

"It's whatever. Now, let's get to class." He brushed past me, walking to his class. I was red in the face by his blatant disrespect.

"I will beat you next time, Richards!" I yell after him. He just waves his hand, not bothering to turn around. Ugh, I hate him so much!
