Hongjoong woke up to the sound of bedsheets ruffling, followed by a child's soft breathing next to him. He opened his eyes to find baby jongho curled up between himself and seonghwa, still clinging on to his stuffed teddy bear. Lately he'd come in to their room during the wee hours just to sleep in their bed. Hongjoong tucked him in before checking his phone, it was 5am.
With a groan, he dragged himself out of bed. That morning he was on breakfast duty, so he had to get up early anyway. He spent some time freshening up in the bathroom before heading to the kitchen. As he flipped through seonghwa's handmade recipe book, he stumbled across a recipe for breakfast waffles. They looked really good in the picture, and it was something he'd never made before, so hongjoong decided on that.
He put on his fathers day apron and began cooking. It was easy to find the ingredients and make the batter, but then came the difficult bit, actually cooking the waffles - last time he tried using a machine to make breakfast, the family had to eat burnt toast. The batter was poured into the waffle maker and he closed the lid, immediately starting the timer on the fridge.
*RRRRIIIIINNNGG!* The timer went off, and he swore it woke everyone in the house up.
He anxiously lifted the lid of the waffle maker and watched the excess batter flow out the sides. It was a mess: the waffle didn't even cook properly.
"Gosh darn it," hongjoong sighed. He cleaned up as much as he could, then tried again.
By the time it was 6am, he'd only made 1 successful waffle.
"Dad?"
Hongjoong heard someone call him. He looked up to see the oldest child, Yunho standing at the doorway. "Yuyu, you're up early. Good morning."
"Morning. Do you need some help?" Yunho walked over to his dad's side and gave him a hug.
"Actually, sweetie I think I do. Have you seen how Mom makes waffles? I followed the recipe but it doesn't work everytime."
"Ohh waffles! Mom once told me that the timer is always set 1 minute early to prevent overcooking. The recipe says 3 minutes, but actually it takes 4 minutes to cook."
Hongjoong helped Yunho put on an apron. "Wow, that explains all my failed waffles. Come on, let's make the rest properly."
With chef assistant Yunho, they managed to complete breakfast by 7am. The second oldest child, Yeosang emerged from his room to help set the table.
"Dad, do we throw the burnt ones?" Yunho asked, holding the plate of failed waffles in his hand.
"No sweetie, I'll eat those. No food wasted."
"But-"
Hongjoong ruffled the child's bedhead "why don't you go get Mom and your siblings? Breakfast is ready."
