I look up from my homework when Mom walks in the door.

"Lily!!" My younger twin sisters aren't far behind her, squealing and running toward me.

"Hey, you troublemakers!" I stand up and wrestle them around a bit before ruffling their hair and sending them off to put their school things away. The twins are much younger than me, so while I chose to attend the local high school when we moved to Japan, my parents thought it would be better for my sisters to go to the elementary school for American kids a little farther away. It makes me sad knowing that their school experience will be different than it would have been if we were still in the States, but they're as energetic as always, so I guess they enjoyed themselves at school.

"How was your first day of school?" My mom asks as she takes off her shoes. The school year here actually started a few weeks ago, but due to the differences in school schedules between Japan and the U.S., and the fact that we were moving internationally, today was my first day attending classes.

"It was fine."

"You could understand your teachers?"

"Yeah. I'm pretty sure my counselor talked to them and asked them to go slow for me." And apparently they talked in their turn, because it seemed like everyone was whispering about the new girl from America. Even the faculty advisor for the boys basketball team knew who I was.

"That was nice of him."

I scowl. I hate feeling like things have to be 'dumbed down' for me.

"Did you make any friends?"

"No. I was too busy trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing. Besides, isn't it my role as visitor to be reached out to, not to be the one who does the reaching out?"

My mom sighs. "Lil, you know you have to reach out to them too. How are they supposed to reach out to you if you're not friendly to them?"

"I am friendly!" I say with indignation. "Anyway, all students are required to join a club."

Mom rolls her eyes at me, but goes along with me as I change the subject. "So what club did you join?"

"None yet. They won't let me play a sport since I just moved here."

"I figured that would be the case," my mom nods.

"Yeah. I tried to be a manager for tennis, swim, and basketball, but that didn't work out either."

My mom frowns. "They told you that you couldn't be a manager?"

"Well, tennis already has enough managers, and apparently the swim team doesn't even want managers, and basketball—" I stop my rant just in time. I know Mom would pull me out of Aoba Johsai and send me to the American school fast enough to leave me dizzy if she thought anything was going badly. "And... basketball couldn't use any more managers either." That's still truthful, right?

"Hm. That's too bad. Do you have a backup plan for a club to join?"

"Nooooo," I slump down against the wall. "It's fine though, I'm sure I'll think of something." I pick up my pencil to finish my homework before my dad comes home for dinner.

On my way to school the next morning, I'm brainstorming all the possible clubs that I might be interested in. As a junior, or a second-year as we're called here, I can't pick just anything because I'm required to join one. I need something that will boost my college applications, even though I'm sure having lived in Japan will already do plenty of boosting.
