Exhausting

"Iwaizumi-san!" I scream, jumping up and down. The fact that Iwa can shoot the ball so accurately through a block is astounding.

The teams line up and bow to each other.

I'm still jumping. As soon as the formalities are over, I run to Hanamaki and tackle him. "Makki-san!"

He grunts when I start punching him in the stomach.

"Why are you so cool?" I shout at him with a laugh.

Makki pushes my head down to break my hold. "You have an aggressive way of showing appreciation, you know that?"

I grin at him. "I get it from Iwaizumi-san," I reach out and shake Hanamaki's shoulders. "But seriously, Makki, you're incredible. Your serves, your reads, your sets— I've never seen you play so well. Good job."

He grins and pats my head twice. "I know, Lily. But thanks anyway." Then he leans in close to whisper something in my ear. "I think you should tell Oikawa he did a good job too."

"Huh?" I question him with my eyes. While I try to reward the players I feel performed especially well in each match, I usually tell all the players they did well, including Oikawa. Hanamaki must know this. So why is he specifically requesting that I praise Oikawa?

Makki puts his hand to his mouth conspiratorially. "I think he's pretty frustrated that his spike got blocked."

"Oh," I glance at Oikawa, and sure enough, his gaze is hard on the court, and he's biting his lip so deep, there's no way it isn't painful. "Sure thing, Makki-san! I got this."

I bump his fist before hopping over to plop myself on the bench beside Oikawa.

"Nice match, Captain," I say cheerfully and rub his hair.

His expression stays the same and he doesn't say a word.

"I've never seen a setter dump with better timing," I try.

Still nothing.

I dig my hand into his head. "Hey, what's wrong?"

Oikawa slowly raises his eyes from the ground. "Why don't you ever congratulate me like that?"

I lean back with a frown. That wasn't what I expected him to say. I follow his line of sight to where Hanamaki is standing. Is that really what he's so pouty about? I thought he was upset about his spike getting blocked. I turn a teasing look on Oikawa. "You want me to punch you? That's kind of concerning, Cap."

He looks at me, his eyes completely serious. "Well, it does seem to be your way of telling people you love them."

Something about that statement freezes my heart, my lungs, my soul. It places my entire being under the control of Oikawa's brown eyes.

I cough to clear the icy feeling from my throat and roll my eyes. "Stand up," I order him.

Seeming to think I'm dismissing him, he lowers his gaze again and waves his hand. "Forget I said anything," he mumbles, pushing himself to his feet. "You're perfect for this team, Lil-chan. I was just being selfish—"

I don't let him finish before I jump onto his back, swinging my fist into his shoulder blade repeatedly. "Nice match, Oikawa-san!" I shout directly into his ear.

He shrinks away from my voice trying to destroy his eardrums with a yelp. But his hands still come under my thighs to support the weight of my body on his back. Then he laughs. A real, happy laugh.
