Winning three out of five practice sets is pretty good. In fact, most people would say it's really good. But I'm not most people. Four out of five is much better. And five out of five is the only acceptable result.
I thought that's how a winner thinks. Then again, maybe it's not. But why wouldn't it be?
I stuff my shoes into my bag, my errant thoughts leading me to trail behind the rest of the team as they file their way out of the gym and onto the bus.
My mind always runs 110% wild whenever Lil-chan gives me a talking to. She somehow knows exactly what to say to make me rethink everything at least three times for the next few days. It seems like this bout of overthinking hasn't yet worn off from her last serious chat with me.
"Oikawa-kun!" I look up in surprise at the sugary voice. I thought I was the only one left in the gym.
Those dark-haired manager twins are standing in front of me, smiling with every ounce of charm available in their faces. Too bad they don't have any charm. Unlike Lil-chan.
Trying not to grimace, I quickly glance around the gym, but there's no one else here. No Iwa or Lily to save me. I've been cornered.
"Hi girls," I manage.
"Hi!" The girl with shorter hair steps forward.
I'm suddenly very grateful for the bench between us. Though it might not hold them back, given that Lil-chan has been so devout in keeping them away from me this week.
"We're so grateful we got to have this training camp with you, Oikawa-kun," the girl throws her arms open wide, taking another step forward. "You're the most amazing setter we've ever seen."
I know.
I put on my star smile and pick up my bag to signal that I want to leave.
The other manager steps forward quickly to lay a hand on my bag, stopping me. "We want to give you something to show our thanks, Oikawa-kun."
"Yes," her sister picks up. "I'd love to stay in touch with you, Oikawa-kun." She pulls out her phone and offers it to me, the screen open to a new contact.
I don't want to give her my number.
Images of everything I've gained this week flash through my brain.
Iwaizumi whipping the boys into shape.
Mad Dog hitting the ball harder and harder with every spike.
The team moving to allow him the space he needs.
The moonlight brushing my face and Lily's hair tickling my arm as I held her hand.
"Wow, I'm flattered," I laugh and rub the back of my head like I usually would. Then I tug my bag free from their grasp and sling it over my shoulder. "But I think I've already gotten everything this camp had to offer."
I walk out of the gym, praying they don't follow. They don't. By some miracle, I'm still pest-free by the time I rejoin the team next to our bus.
Most of the boys have already climbed on, but Lily instantly comes to my side in the back of the line. "There you are."
"Were you worried?" I bring my face close to hers with a smirk.
She raises an eyebrow. "Hardly. But I think Coach Mizoguchi's heart is about to explode from all the high blood pressure you've caused him." Putting her hands to her mouth, she yells at our assistant coach. "Coach! Oikawa's here!"
