Stay or leave?
Stay and support these athletes, or leave and be my own athlete?
Stay and Mad Dog stays my friend, or leave and Mad Dog cuts me off?
"Lily?"
"Huh?" My head jerks up from where I was absentmindedly gnawing on my sandwich to see Iwaizumi looking at me inquisitively.
"Are you okay?" The spiky-haired third-year asks me. "You've been super quiet."
"Oh, yeah," I wave him off. "I'm fine. I just have a lot on my mind."
"What's on your mind, Lil-chan?" Oikawa bumps his shoulder into mine.
"Next year."
Oikawa's eyebrows come together slightly. "Next year?"
I nod. "If my family stays in Japan, I need to make a decision about what club I want to be in."
Iwaizumi instantly understands. "You want to play sports again."
Oikawa, however, is stuck on a different part of my sentence. "If your family stays in Japan? Are you moving again?" His voice is calm and steady like it always is, but his smile is tense.
"I don't know," I shake my head. "There are no plans right now, but my dad moves when he wants to. I won't know until he's already made the decision."
"No," Oikawa shakes his head and wraps his arms around me, drawing me against him. "You're not allowed to leave."
"Okay," I laugh and pat his knee to pacify him. "You can tell my parents that if they announce that we're moving."
He tugs my hair as he lets go. "I will."
"What clubs are you deciding between?" Iwaizumi interrupts. "Basketball and tennis? How about girls volleyball? You've gotten pretty good while practicing with us."
I straighten. I hadn't even thought of girls volleyball. "Well, actually— " I start, but Yuda cuts in before I can explain.
"I thought I could trust you to stay with the team. I should have known better," he gives a disappointed shake of his head.
Oikawa whips his head toward him. "Shut up, Yudacchi."
"Yeah, keep your crap to yourself, Yudacchi," Iwa reinforces.
Yuda raises his head in surprise, but mutters, "Sorry."
Iwaizumi gestures for me to continue.
"Actually," I say, glaring at Yuda. So much for us finally being friends. "I've been trying to decide if I want to play my own sport or stay with the boys volleyball team."
Someone's phone rings, saving me from giving the guys the same rundown of my decision that is getting more and more frustrating each time I repeat it.
Oikawa pulls his phone from his pocket and answers the call. "Hi, Okaa-chan! ... Oh? Right now? Yeah, okay..." His eyes dart over to me. "Yeah, she's here."
I look at him in surprise. What could his mom be saying about me?
"Okay. I'll see. Bye, Okaa-chan." Oikawa pockets his phone and turns to me. "She said the photos from the shoot we did just came in. She wants us to go look at them. Is your next class important?"
