Scared

"Alright, guys," I stand and address my teammates gathered in the gym. "Today's clinic is meant to be chill. You can do homework, hang out, and I'll get out some volleyballs, so basically you can do whatever you want. But you aren't allowed to exhaust yourselves practicing, okay?"

A chorus of assent rises from the group of boys in front of me and I jog over to the closet to wheel out a basket of volleyballs. Grabbing one, I toss it back and forth between my hands as I walk between the boys.

Kunimi is doing homework with Yuda and Sawauchi, and Shido is talking with Iwaizumi.

I stop to reach down and ruffle Kunimi's hair. "You're such a good student, Kuni-chan," I tease him.

He shrinks his head away from my touch. "I know."

Sawauchi pulls out a pair of earbuds and pops one in as he writes down an answer on his paper.

I squat down next to him. "You know, Sawauchi-san, we still haven't talked about music."

"Oh," he glances at me. "Right. Um, would you like to listen?" He offers me his other earbud.

I take it from him happily. "Sure! It's about time we find out if we have similar taste."

When I put the earbud in my ear, a fast beat vibrates into my brain. A solid voice with impressive range sings about having high hopes for the future. My eyes widen. I spin to the third-year on my right. "Sawauchi-san! You listen to this band?"

He nods. "I have a bunch of their songs saved."

"Me too!" I grin. I sit back against the wall and bob my head to the familiar melody. When the song ends, I sit up straight, curious to see whether I'll recognize the next one. The beat is slower, but the instrumentals are just as interesting, and the voice is good too. But I don't know this song. I tap the screen of Sawauchi's phone to look at the title and artist. Then I pull out my own phone to add it to my playlist.

Right when I finish, my phone buzzes with an incoming message. It's from Aya.

Seijoh recruited a new player right before a tournament? Wow, that would be tough. If the new player is having a hard time cooperating with the team, then my best advice would be for everyone to become friends with him first. That way he'll be able to build trust with his teammates. So it sounds like you're already doing what you need to do! I hope it goes well!

Hmm. That's about what I expected her to say. I wonder what I can do to help that process move along a little faster. Mad Dog didn't come to my clinic again. I invited him, of course. I should try harder to get him to join us in these more casual settings.

I slip my phone back into my pocket in time to see Kunimi complete a worksheet. Maybe I should do homework too. Since I started going to free practice, I've been falling behind on some assignments. Or maybe I should take the opportunity to practice volleyball. I haven't had many opportunities to work on my own skills lately. I set the volleyball spinning on my finger while I contemplate my options.

"Lily-kun," Watari waves at me. "I'll pass the ball with you if you want."

Kindaichi shoots to his feet. "Can I join?"

"Absolutely," I smile at him. It looks like homework will have to wait a little longer. I return Sawauchi's earbud to him before I stand up. "Yahaba, do you want to join too?"

The light-haired second year meets my eyes. "No, thanks." He tugs my bag toward him from the wall. "Can I use this?"

"Uh, yeah, sure. What for?"
