Cheering from the crowd pulls my attention back to the court. Karasuno just scored.
I grit my teeth. They're still holding on, huh?
On the next point, Hanamaki attacks with a beautiful spike down the line, but Sawamura-san picks it up.
Kageyama sends the ball to Man-bun, who hits us with a return spike of his own.
Oikawa manages the dig with a knee-dive, but the receive is off.
I sink off the bench into a crouch. "Come on, come on, come on..."
Suddenly Kunimi dives across the court, saving the ball.
My jaw drops. Kunimi just ran after the ball? With a diving receive, no less?
We end up giving Karasuno an easy chance ball, but that's fine. As long as the ball is in the air.
Karasuno's number 5 approaches the net and jumps.
My muscles tense. His spikes have been tough throughout the game. We can't let him defeat us now. Not after this long rally.
Number 5 spikes down the line, where we have no defenders.
A groan builds in my throat, but it's cut short when the line judge raises his flag high in the air. It was out. I breathe a sigh of relief.
"Kunimi!" I yell. "Nice cover!"
He doesn't give any sign to acknowledge my praise. He's probably tired enough to consider acknowledging me to be a waste of energy. I'm fine with that. As long as he uses his energy on the court.
We're up 22-19. Can we keep the lead until the end?
Karasuno's first-year with glasses lands a spike.
22-20.
Kindaichi scores with an attack down the center.
23-20.
"Nice, Kindaichi!" I yell.
My clipboard sits on the ground between my feet, my stats forgotten. All I can do at this point is cheer.
Hanamaki hits his next spike out.
23-21.
"Shake it off, Makki-san!"
Are my bits of encouragement even making a difference? I feel so helpless. I hate it.
Karasuno's number 5 goes for another spike down the line, but this time Iwaizumi and Oikawa are there in front of him.
Oikawa's arms solidly connect with the ball, sending it spiraling down to Karasuno's court.
I pound my fist against the ground. "Yes, Captain! Nice block—"
The ball is flying into the air again, having bounced off Number 5's foot.
No way.
My fist is frozen against the ground.
Karasuno's number 10 barely saves the ball from hitting the court again and it softly tips over the net, hitting our side of the court before Iwaizumi can get there.
What a lucky play for Karasuno.
I roll forward onto my toes, gritting my teeth to relieve some frustration before I shout, "Shake it off, guys! Oikawa, nice block! Keep it up!"
