"So..." I lean over to Iwaizumi as the team files off the bus on the morning of Interhigh Prelims and whisper, "Why is everyone so tense?" I would have thought the boys would be excited.
We grab our stuff, walking toward the gymnasium, and Iwaizumi sighs. "My guess is that it's because there's a possibility we'll be going up against Karasuno High. We'll find out after today's matches."
"Karasuno? What's special about them?"
"We had a practice match with them a while back, before you joined the team. They beat us in straight sets. We put up a good fight, but two of their first-years team up for this freakish quick attack. We didn't stop it once. In fact, it put them at such an advantage over us that even Oikawa couldn't turn things around once he finally showed up. If he had been there for the entire match, we probably would have won, but I think it would have been close either way."
"Yeah, that quick attack really was something," Matsukawa steps up to walk in line with us. "I've never seen anything like it. Not at the high school level."
"Oh, wow," I say, a bit at a loss for anything else. I know Oikawa is a brilliant setter, but could he, just one player, really make that much of a difference? I'm not sure, but I'll take their word for it. I smirk. "So, you want me to go slip razorblades into their pockets?"
Iwaizumi blinks at me, then starts laughing.
Coach Mizoguchi, however, doesn't find me funny. "No student from Aoba Johsai will sabotage other teams!" He turns on me.
It's my turn to blink confusedly. "Coach, I wasn't actually going to do it! Who do you think I am?" I huff, folding my arms and turning away. "Besides, you shouldn't be worried that I might carry out my idle threats. You should be worried that your team's captain has disappeared."
Slight panic enters his eyes as they leave me to notice his star setter's absence.
"Where's Oikawa?" Coach Irihata barks, once he notices as well.
Yahaba is the only one brave enough to answer, "I think some girls from other schools caught hold of him at the entrance..."
I roll my eyes.
Coach's panic is overtaken by exasperation. "Iwaizumi..." he growls.
Iwa snaps to attention. "On it." He stalks back to the front doors of the school, volleyball in hand.
I snicker a bit. Oikawa is about to get it.
Iwaizumi catches up to us a few minutes later, Oikawa following with a pout and rubbing the back of his head.
Hanamaki and I have to turn away to hide our laughter.
Makki leans down with a hand covering his mouth like he's sharing a great secret with me. "This happens often."
"Oh yeah?" I glance back at Oikawa, who is still pouting pitifully. "Like... how often?"
"You don't want to know," Makki fixes me with a serious stare.
I give him a sober nod. "You're right. I don't."
He pats my shoulder. "Good decision."
We head up to the seating above the courts, since we aren't playing for a while. I hang back to walk with Kindaichi, Iwa, and Oikawa, simultaneously trying to take everything in. It's been a long time since I've been in a gym this big for a sports tournament. The tension in here is making me a little nervous, as if I were the one about to compete.
