Stubborn

I was a liar.

Especially to myself.

And if it weren't for Daisuke and Iwaizumi, I still would be.

I stare at Oikawa across the court where he's working on setting techniques with Yahaba and Watari. His fingers toss the ball into the air over and over.

I finally admitted to myself that I like Oikawa, and that it's okay to like Oikawa, even if he is a pretty boy jerk. I haven't told him that though. We kissed, but neither of us has communicated anything about what we want our relationship to be. And I'm still having a hard time getting over what Iwaizumi called my 'stupid' stubbornness to do anything about it.

Oikawa catches the ball and glances over at me, so I quickly look away.

'Your captain needs you.'

Daisuke's words ring in my ears, making me shiver.

Maybe he does. But it's not something I want to risk being wrong about. Not when I might interfere with volleyball. When it comes to Oikawa, it is way too delicate a balance.

'Trust me when I say that you won't distract him from volleyball.'

Iwaizumi's voice this time.

I scowl and look at Oikawa as he tosses the ball up for Yahaba to set. Every time I look, my resolve falters. All I want to do is wrap my arms around him and never let go. The more I watch, the more I smile. The more I want to run forward and...

Run forward and do what, Lily? You can't actually hug him forever. That's not practical. And it's embarrassing.

But when my team captain with the perfect brown eyes looks at me again, my brain seems to think doing irrational things would be just fine.

Instead of running forward however, I sigh and turn away. I grab my bag and walk up to Mad Dog on the sideline.

"Hey, Kyotani, if anyone asks, I left to do some prep for my next clinic."

I start to leave, but Mad Dog grabs his bag and joins me.

"I'm coming with you," he says gruffly. "There's no way I'm sticking around with these losers on my own."

I roll my eyes. "They're your teammates."

"Yeah, so?"

"Don't pretend you don't like them."

"Don't pretend you're leaving to work on your clinic," he retorts.

"What do you mean by that?" I growl at him.

Mad Dog rolls his eyes. "It's so obvious. You've been staring at that guy for the past hour."

I feel my ears heat up. "I have not," I argue, even though he didn't specify who has been the center of my attention.

"Why do you like that piece of crap?"

"He is a piece of crap," I agree. "So I don't have an answer for you, because I don't know."

"Sounds stupid and boring," Kyotani grunts, clearly insinuating that he doesn't want to hear more.

"Tell me about it," I grumble.

I can't stop fidgeting the next day at lunch, sitting restlessly with Yahaba and Watari.
