"That was the longest bus ride ever," I groan. I hop down the steps of the vehicle and stretch.
Iwaizumi steps down calmly. "It's the same one we've had the past two days."
"Whatever. It felt longer. How much farther do we have to walk?" For our own matches, the bus from the school dropped us off right at the front of the gymnasium, but the public bus doesn't run that close.
"Not far," Iwa points ahead and to our left. "Just a few blocks that way."
I follow him as he takes the lead. Even though I complained about the length of the bus ride, I am super excited to watch the match for nationals. Both Karasuno and Shiratorizawa are incredible teams. I may be bitter that they beat Aoba Johsai, but I also wouldn't miss a chance to see them play each other.
I had originally asked Daisuke if he wanted to come with me, but he said he has an exam today that he can't miss. So, when Iwaizumi called me last night to invite me to go with him, I didn't hesitate in accepting.
"Hey, Iwa-san, why didn't you come here with Tōru?"
Iwaizumi looks at me.
"Agh, Oikawa! Why didn't you come with Oikawa? I thought you two would have come together," I blurt out, trying fruitlessly to cover my slip.
The third-year just raises an eyebrow at me, then shrugs. "I don't think he wanted to come."
If that's true, it's understandable. Losing hurts. And you never know if you want the team that beat you to win so you look better, or lose so you get some vicarious vengeance.
We turn the corner into a sea of people swarming toward the giant sports complex ahead of us and I immediately lose Iwaizumi in the bodies.
I freeze for a moment, then lunge forward as soon as I catch sight of Iwa's spiky hair. Carving my way through the masses, I latch onto the elbow of his blue jacket. "There are so many people here," I say to him, in awe.
He nods. "This is the biggest volleyball match in all of Miyagi."
When we reach the building, he puts his arm around my shoulders to guide me through the halls and people. Space to walk soon becomes scarce, however, leaving him to drop his arm and lead me by the hand as we weave between everyone.
I follow behind him, gawking at the sheer enormity of the gym we enter. It's easily the biggest court I've ever seen. None of our previous matches took place in this part of the complex. We were always on smaller, much less impressive courts. I try to take it all in as Iwa takes us to the top of the seating area. I'm so busy staring at it all that I don't notice when he stops and I run into him.
"I thought you weren't going to come."
"Huh?" I crane my head around to look at him, confused. And then I see Oikawa trying to make himself very small in his seat, and looking very caught. And very attractive. Other than our impromptu photo shoot, I've never seen the team captain in anything other than his school or team uniform. While both Iwaizumi and I are sporting hoodies, Oikawa is wearing something akin to business casual. It makes me chuckle inwardly. It totally fits his personality. It's also totally adorable. But I refuse to acknowledge any draw I feel towards him. Especially not in front of Iwaizumi.
Iwa hops down the row of seats to stand next to Oikawa. "You said you weren't going to come because no matter which team won, it would piss you off."
I follow Iwa and jump down to stand on the same row as my teammates.
Oikawa smiles somewhat evilly and throws his limbs out to stretch confidently. "Yes, well, I'll still get to see the other teams' faces when they lose."
