This is it.
We finally get to play Karasuno High School.
We squarely crushed our first opponents yesterday, Oomisaki High School, in straight sets. It was the perfect match to start the preliminary tournament, and I'm proud of the boys.
Now, I'm standing on the same court as the team that has made my own teammates so wary. I can't wait to see firsthand how we'll match up against them. And how Karasuno's setter matches up against Oikawa.
I gasp. I forgot to ask Iwaizumi about Karasuno's setter. I was so hyped from our win yesterday that it slipped my mind. I spin to face Iwa where he's stretching with the team. Is it too late to talk to him? I don't want to mess up his pre-game routine. Besides, we're already on court with Karasuno, so I doubt I'll have any chances to say something I shouldn't anyway.
I sigh. I would have liked to know before the match, but now that we're here, it can wait.
Both teams take their time to warm up and I carefully study Karasuno when they take their turn on the court. That little redhead kid really can jump. His physical ability still surprises me. And makes me jealous. I'm taller than him and I can't jump as high as he can.
I catch some of the Karasuno boys taking multiple glances at me and I smirk. There's no harm in me showing off a little, right? If I can do anything to intimidate them, I will.
When it's our turn to use the court, I jump in with the team on warming up serves. I practiced jump serving in those clinics serving with Yahaba. Back then, when I started, I didn't have any trouble with normal serves, thanks to my experience with tennis. So I started jump serving. The dynamics were harder than I thought they would be, but I got better. I'm still not great. Right now, my accuracy is probably around 25 or 30%. Not all that impressive. But I'm confident that I can land one right now. Maybe that will scare the Karasuno boys a bit.
Snagging a ball from the basket, I approach Oikawa for permission, lest I throw off the team's vibe. I hold up my ball. "Mind if I serve a few, Cap?"
Oikawa glances at me, then smiles malevolently at our opponents. "You show 'em, Lil-chan." He gives my ponytail a tug, then assumes his serving position.
I grin and follow suit. After missing a couple, I land one exactly in the leftmost corner of the court. "Yes!" I yell and pump my fist. I resist the urge to gloat in Karasuno's direction, instead running to pick up balls for my teammates so they can start warming up their spikes before our team huddle.
I take a seat next to the coaches on the bench, slightly stunned after the boys filed onto the court. When Oikawa told the team that he believes in them, their mood took a complete one-eighty. He did the same thing before our last match, but the effect of his words was much more drastic this time. If it were anyone else who told me they believed in me that seriously before a game, I would laugh them off. But Oikawa makes it incredibly impactful. I'm not on the court ready to play, but I'm in the zone, ready to win. And I can tell the boys are too.
Karasuno is the first to serve.
I focus in. Do they have formidable servers? While they were warming up, I only noticed the setter doing jump serves. The player serving now is in position for a regular serve.
He sends the ball over the net and Kunimi receives it easily.
Matsukawa and Iwaizumi both start their approach.
