I set the medical bag on the ground by the bench and take a look around at the gym. We've been in and out of it all day, which is tiring in and of itself. What surprises me though, is that the number of spectators hasn't seemed to diminish. A lot of them are players from other schools, but a lot aren't. Is high school volleyball really that popular here?
We beat Senseki High School in straight sets earlier, and now, we're up against the team Iwaizumi called "absolute goofballs." I have to admit that my curiosity about our opponents keeps growing.
I breathe in and out with a chuckle. Time to fill the water bottles again. "Hey, Oikawa-san, I'm going to go fill up the water bottles."
"Thanks, we'll start warming up."
I'm about to turn away with the bottle cages when Oikawa calls back to me.
"Be careful, Lil-chan!"
I furrow my brows and swing back around to him. He can't possibly know about my last mishap with the water bottles, can he? "You've said that to me practically every time I've left the team's vicinity. Why?"
If he hears me, he doesn't show it, jogging off to call the team together for warmups.
I scowl and stick my tongue out at his back. Turning left out of the gym, I find the water fountains I used earlier, set the cages down, and start filling bottles.
"Hey, Blondie!"
I look up, surprised, the stream of water spilling onto my hand.
A boy with an undercut and bleached hair is smiling and waving at me.
I frown slightly– no one has called me Blondie since I moved to Japan, and I don't want it to start now. And technically, this boy is also blond, so it doesn't make sense for him to use the term to address me. But I give a small wave back, wipe my wet hand on my jacket, then return my attention to the water bottles. In my peripheral vision, I see him walk toward me, the mustard yellow jacket of his uniform swishing in and out of view. I pretend not to notice his approach.
When the water bottle I'm holding is full, I replace it in its cage, grab an empty one, and start filling it in the fountain.
The boy is next to me now. He says something in Japanese, but the only word I understand is 'number', so I don't respond.
His hand closes over mine on the water bottle and lifts it from the fountain, spilling water on me again.
"Hey!" I exclaim, glaring into his playful chestnut eyes.
"Do you speak Japanese, Blondie?"
I rip my hand away from his, set the water bottle down, and dry off my hand, still glaring. "Don't call me that. My name is Lillian."
"Do you speak Japanese, Lillian?" His smile doesn't waver.
"Only a little bit."
"Enough to give me your number?" His grin is so confidently reckless, I can definitely see why he can pull out that line so bluntly. Girls must fall all over him for that. But I'm not going for it.
"Enough to tell you I'm here for volleyball, not to be picked up by boys who bleach their hair," I retort, even though I wouldn't have a chance at saying that in Japanese.
He laughs, showing off a tongue piercing.
My eyebrows go up in surprise. Crazy hair and a tongue piercing? Who is this kid?
