I stalk to the table where Watari and Yahaba are already eating lunch, throw my food down, and let myself fall to the bench.
"Whoa. Lily, what's wrong?" Watari asks, gray eyes filled with concern.
"Guys, we have a problem," I pull the collar of my jacket to my mouth, trying to calm my panic and anger.
Since the training camp a couple weeks ago, our team's chemistry with Mad Dog has gradually degenerated. I've been doing my best to encourage both parties to get along and work together, but it doesn't seem to be helping much. Mad Dog still refuses to hang out with us outside of practice, and during practice, he still insists on doing things his way without any regard for the other players. The rest of the guys are getting fed up with it. I don't know what to do. It's nearly impossible to track down Mad Dog during school hours, and when I cornered him after practice to invite him to my clinic, he flat out refused.
"I agree that we have a problem," Yahaba calmly takes a bite of his food. "A moody manager might be more than I can handle."
"Shut up, Yahaba-kun," I glare at him.
He smiles at me innocently. "I'm being honest with you, Lily. You're super intense right now. My poor heart doesn't stand a chance."
I roll my eyes and shove him with one hand. "I said, shut up,"
Yahaba rebounds from my shove and leans way closer to me than is necessary. "You're only making it worse, you know. Pushing me around like that."
He flinches away when both Watari and I kick him under the table.
"You let out your teasing side at the strangest times, you know that, Yahaba-kun?"
"Lily-kun, why don't you talk us through what's going on?" Watari suggests.
I return my angry gaze to my sandwich. "It's Mad Dog."
Yahaba groans. "Don't talk to me about Mad Dog."
"But that's exactly it," I turn on the bench to face the sandy-haired second-year, my sandwich sitting neglected in my hand. "We need to talk about Mad Dog. We need him on this team, and we can't keep ignoring the problem."
"What do you think the problem actually is, Lily?" Watari asks, ever the helpful one.
"Mad Dog doesn't have any friends on the team. He doesn't trust us yet. And no one else on the team has the patience to help him trust us," I glare pointedly at Yahaba, who sniffs as if I couldn't possibly be talking about him.
"Hmmm..." Watari taps his fingers thoughtfully. "How do we help him trust us? After all, we've been doing our best to let him play the way he wants. But we can't do that all the time. He needs to work with us too."
"I think it comes down to our interactions with him off the court. If we show him we care about him as a person, and not just as a weapon in our matches, that should help him trust us."
Watari and Yahaba both look down at their food.
"Right?" I poke them.
Watari sighs. "You're right, Lily, but it doesn't seem like he wants to hang out with us. I don't want to force him."
"I'd rather hang out with you," Yahaba scoots closer to me.
I ignore him. "I know it doesn't seem like he wants to hang out with us. In fact, he's turned down every single one of my invitations," I grumble.
