"Mom, Dad, I'm home!" I drop my bag on the couch.
"Lily!" Andi and Quinn shout in unison as they run out of their room to jump on me.
"Hey, you little rascals!" I stumble, trying not to step on them running around me. Ironically, their energy calms my nerves a little bit.
I haven't told my parents about the training camp yet, and I'm nervous that they won't be too happy with the idea of me spending a week with a bunch of high school boys. But I need to be there. I'll do anything to get their permission.
"Lil!" My mom pokes her head out of the kitchen. "Dinner is ready. Will you get your dad?"
It takes my parents a few minutes to wrangle my twin sisters to the table. I planned to bring up the training camp during our meal together, but the words won't leave my throat. Maybe I'll wait until Andi and Quinn are in bed.
A couple hours later, the twins are tucked in, and I'm helping my mom clean up the kitchen. My brain is begging me to procrastinate for a couple more days. Maybe a week or two. But I know that isn't a good idea. I need to do it now.
"Hey, Mom? Can I talk to you and Dad about something?"
"Sure, honey," She looks at me with worry in her eyes and calls my dad over to join us at the table.
My heart is beating fast. Why is it so nerve-wracking to ask my parents to go to my team's training camp? I've attended countless training camps for my high school athletics. It's only natural for me to attend one with my new team. Right?
"Is everything alright, Lil? Did something go wrong at school? We can transfer you to the American school." My mom instantly assumes that sending me to Aoba Johsai was a mistake.
It took a lot of effort for me to convince my parents to allow me to attend Aoba Johsai. They were nervous about sending me to an all Japanese school when I'm not fluent in the language nor familiar with the culture. In the end, I only won their permission by arguing that Dad was moving us to Japan for the sole reason of experiencing the culture as inspiration for his new book, so I should be allowed to experience it too, at the fullest extent possible. But they've been on the edge of revoking their decision ever since.
"No, Mom, it's the opposite actually. Everything is going great at school."
My mom sighs in relief. "Oh, I'm glad to hear that."
"How is the volleyball team doing?" Dad asks.
"They're amazing," I grin. "That's what I want to talk about. The team is preparing for our next tournament, and we have a training camp in a couple weeks, so I'm just making sure I have permission to go."
"I don't see why not," my dad says. "You've been to training camps before."
"But not in Japan," my mom cuts in. "Where is the camp at, Lil?"
"It's at Shiratorizawa Academy. In Sendai. Close by where Andi and Quinn go to school."
It's silent for a moment. I need to tell them.
"And it's a week-long camp," I say quickly.
My mom's eyes go wide and my dad frowns.
I feel the need to add, "Just like most of my camps have been."
"I don't know about this, Lil," Mom confesses. "Your attendance at Aoba Johsai has always been difficult for me."
"I know, Mom. But you decided to let me try, right? And it's going really well. I love it there."
