"Everybody get on the bus!" Coach Mizoguchi roars.
I yawn. How does he have the energy to be so aggressive this early in the morning? I file myself into line behind the team, my duffel drooping over my shoulder as they pile onto the bus.
Today is the first day of our training camp. I should have paid more attention to the itinerary Coach provided us with, because I did not prepare myself for this early of a start.
Making my way up the steps, I scan the seats full of teenage boys.
Kindaichi is already asleep against his window, with Kunimi on the other side of him.
I step over volleyball bags strewn across the walkway, ignoring the open seat across from Oikawa, on my way to sit down across from Kunimi and in front of Yahaba and Mad Dog. I'm surprised those two are even sitting with each other.
I can feel Oikawa watching me pass him and he stands up.
"Guys, pick up your bags, you're going to injure someone!" He yells, then huffs under his breath, "Slobs." He keeps his eyes on me all the way to my seat, as if to make sure that I make it there safely.
I force myself not to look at him, for fear of making eye contact. Our interaction has been limited the past couple weeks, due to the fact that I've been avoiding him as much as possible. I feel bad for yelling at him, and I know I need to apologize. I had already been riled up from the conversation with my parents, and my frustration came out against Oikawa, which is ironic, given that he had just solved my problem after I cried to him for help. I shouldn't have been so angry with him. But at the same time, all the things I said were true, and I'm not about to take them back. I don't know how he feels about the whole exchange, and that's my fault. He's clearly been wanting to talk to me, and I keep running away from the conversation.
I sigh.
"What's wrong, Lily?" Yahaba's voice shakes me out of my thoughts.
"Huh? Oh. Nothing."
He doesn't look convinced in the least, but I turn to Mad Dog and change the subject.
"Do you like getting up early, Mad Dog?"
The striped-haired second-year glances at me and mutters, "No."
"Yeah, me neither," I yawn. I lean my head against the window, kicking my feet onto my seat. It's my intention to carry a conversation with Mad Dog, but I fall asleep before I can think of anything to say.
I wake with a start when the bus jerks to a stop, sending me tumbling off my seat into the seat in front of me and onto the floor.
"Ouch," I groan. I slowly bring my arms beneath me to start pushing myself up.
"Are you okay, Lil-chan?"
Hands grab my waist and haul me up, and I find myself nose to nose with Oikawa.
I make an embarrassing squeaking noise and rip away from his hold. "No! I mean, yes! Yeah, I'm good. Thanks, Cap." I make a show of stretching and rubbing my eyes, absolutely using sleepiness as an excuse for the humiliating sequence of events that just occurred.
Yahaba is laughing uncontrollably and I glare at him.
"Shut up," I mutter. "I'm tired."
"Well, we're here," Oikawa informs me, looking at me for a moment more before moving on to wake up Kindaichi.
The coaches from Shiratorizawa greet us as we file off the bus. They lead us to the gym, where a few other teams are already warming up, then hand us off to a few first-year players who show us the way to the dorms we'll be staying in.
