My knee won't stop bouncing.
Yuda keeps glaring at me, obviously annoyed by my fidgeting. So much for my attempt to show him I want to be better friends by sitting next to him on the bus.
"Sorry," I apologize to him. "I don't know why I'm nervous."
"It's fine," Yuda accepts my apology, looking somewhat pacified, but still annoyed.
"Here, I can fix it," Iwaizumi leans over the back of his seat and drops his heavy bag on my leg, weighing it down enough to cease my bouncing.
"Thanks, Iwa-san," I look up at him dryly. "I couldn't have done it without you."
"No problem."
The fact that our tournament match is taking place later in the afternoon ended up being worse torture than I thought it would be. We still got out of going to class, but that meant we sat together in the gym, going over strategies for the hundredth time and casually bumping volleyballs around. The waiting and anticipation really messed with me.
Or maybe that's not why I'm nervous.
I barely remembered to call Daisuke after the fiasco with Oikawa last night, and amidst my bumbling apologies for so rudely pushing him off Aoba Johsai campus, I blurted out an invitation for him to come to Sendai and watch our match today.
His promise to come doesn't make me nervous.
The idea of him watching our match doesn't make me nervous.
And his repeated expression of how happy he was that I invited him just makes me blush.
What makes me nervous is how Oikawa is going to react if he sees Daisuke there. I know Oikawa was just stressed when we fought about it a couple weeks ago. And I know he wasn't at his best when he met Daisuke last night. But I don't know what he'll do if he finds out I invited him to an official match. I'll just have to hope that they don't run into each other. I don't want to throw Oikawa off his game.
The bus drops us off at the entrance to the gym, and we all pile out.
"We have some time before we need to start warming up for our match," Coach Irihata clasps his hands behind his back. "We'll meet in practice gym number three at 2:45."
"I think Karasuno is playing Wakunan right now," Iwaizumi slaps Oikawa and I on the shoulders. "Do you guys want to go watch?"
"Yes!" I push a few of the other guys along with us toward the stairs.
The door across the lobby opens and a dark-haired boy walks in by himself, tall enough for me to see him above the crowd. Daisuke spots me immediately and waves.
I stumble, shoving Kunimi and Oikawa toward the stairs faster than I meant to. "Sorry! I'll be right with you guys, I'm just going to use the bathroom first."
Oikawa looks over the crowd, eyes landing on Daisuke. He watches the tall boy make his way toward me, then turns and starts walking up the stairs. "Be careful, Lil-chan." His voice is pure melancholy.
My stomach clenches in guilt, but I shake it off. I'm not doing anything wrong. And it looks like Oikawa is annoyed, but is fine otherwise. I usher the rest of the team up the stairs, then dodge around several incoming teams to where Daisuke is waiting for me by some chairs. He's wearing jeans, an open button up over a t-shirt, and several bracelets on one wrist. In short, he looks super attractive.
