I sit back down after Oikawa and Takeru take their leave, staking out the entrance of the city gym. I don't know when volleyball free practice starts, but I don't want to risk missing Mad Dog when he walks in.
If he walks in.
When he doesn't appear in the next five minutes, I pull a few sheets of paper and a pencil from my bag. I roughly sketch a few rectangles, then start drawing out our team's plays. Visualizing them in this way will help them stick in my brain better. I want to be able to recognize what other teams do as well, so knowing my own team's plays by heart will give me reference points. And this will help me be productive while I wait.
I look up whenever the doors open, but Mad Dog isn't among the people walking through them.
Worry starts building up inside me. What if he doesn't come? This is the only place I know to look for him. If I don't figure out a way to spend time with him, it could be the whole team that suffers.
Trying to distract myself from my anxious thoughts, I turn my attention back to my papers. But it's no use. The lines are passing right through my vision and floating out of my brain. My head jerks up every time the door opens. My foot taps faster every time I don't see a boy with striped hair coming in.
The door opens again, letting in a group of guys carrying duffel bags and volleyballs.
I shoot up straight from my hunched over position. Volleyball free practice must be starting. I don't recognize any of these guys, but Mad Dog will probably be here soon. I watch the door like a hawk as more boys with volleyball gear come in. Most of these guys are coming in groups, but I'm guessing Mad Dog will come alone. Or maybe that's a horrible thing for me to assume.
Another boy walks in with a bag slung over his shoulder and a volleyball in hand. Not Mad Dog. But this guy looks slightly familiar.
I don't think he goes to Aoba Johsai, but I've definitely seen him before.
His dark hair swishes over his forehead as he looks around. His eyes pass over me, then shift back quickly, like he recognizes me too.
And at that moment when our eyes connect, it hits me. This is the guy who was setting for Mad Dog the night I first met him. I jump up, stuffing papers in my bag haphazardly, and run toward him. "Hey!"
He jumps slightly at my sudden approach. "Um, hi."
I smile and try to look less like a crazy person by zipping my bag closed and placing it over my shoulder.
The setter sweeps his gaze over my school uniform. "You go to Aoba Johsai."
"Yes, I do. My name is Lillian, it's nice to meet you."
"Daisuke," he shakes my offered hand.
"The last time I was here, you were setting for Mad Dog," I mention, hoping to confirm that he is the person I think he is.
He stares at me blankly and my stomach shrivels.
Shoot. Was it not him? That's so embarrassing.
Then his eyes widen and his hair shakes to the sides of his ears as he laughs. "Oh, you mean Kyotani. Yeah, that was me. I'm surprised you remember."
Kyotani. That must be Mad Dog's real name.
"Me too," I admit. "It was an interesting night."
"So, you must be Aoba Johsai's team manager, right? Did Kyotani join your team? Is he still playing there?"
"Yes, yes, and I'm trying to keep it that way," I say, then hesitate. "Daisuke-san, I'm actually glad I ran into you. Can I ask you something?"
