Day three. Stealth is key. I need to blend into the crowd. The goal is to get to my first class. Which requires passing Mr. Kakeru's office. Given that I skipped our meeting yesterday, being seen trying to sneak past him now would not be good. Unfortunately for me, going unnoticed in a Japanese school where I'm the only American is probably next to impossible. Am I attempting the doomed mission anyway? Absolutely.
I flip my hood over my head to cover my long blonde hair, take off my backpack, and hug it to my chest, since its style would give me away. As I'm about to come in front of Mr. Kakeru's open door, I slip behind a group of my peers, matching their pace and turning the corner as quickly as I can.
I did it. I blow out a breath, not daring to look back to see if Mr. Kakeru is sitting at his desk. Instead, I fix my eyes on the floor, and continue making my way to my classroom.
"Miss Kara."
I jump.
Mr. Kakeru is standing in front of me, a deep frown etched into his face. Impressive, since he's usually frowning in the first place. Curses. My stellar spy skills were useless.
"Why didn't you come to my office after school yesterday." It's not even a question. He is not interested in hearing pathetic excuses.
But that's exactly what I am going to give him.
"I hadn't chosen a club to join yet, so I figured coming to the meeting wouldn't have been helpful."
He stands there frowning.
I stand there awkwardly holding my bag.
Eventually, Mr. Kakeru shakes his head and moves past me, saying, "I have reports to finish now, so you'll have to come meet with me after classes today." He stops walking, but doesn't turn around to finish, "It would not be wise to skip again."
I nod, even though he can't see me. A sense of dread fills my mind. I sling my backpack over my shoulder once more and sit down in my first class of the day, thinking about how Mr. Kakeru will probably sentence me to manual labor if I don't have a club chosen by the time I walk into his office.
Some goddess of luck out there must be taking pity on me, because Mrs. Yuuki didn't ask me to peer tutor again. I almost certainly would have been of no help even if she had asked me. Instead, I was left to consider my dismal fate without interruption.
I slump down in my corner of the courtyard for lunch, at an utter loss for anything I can do for club activities. Some boys are dribbling a basketball to my left and I watch them for a while. My conversation with Coach Roku comes back to me. He told me with complete confidence that I would find a club I would excel in.
But at this point in time, sports are probably the only thing I can excel in, since my Japanese isn't up to par.
Wait.
That's it.
Just because I don't run competitively anymore doesn't mean I wouldn't be good at managing their track and field team. Or even their cross country team.
Mr. Kakeru's list of clubs nearly rips as I yank it out of my backpack. I scan through the bullet points quickly. There.
