"Lil-chan, I've had a brilliant idea," Oikawa corners me after school.
I decide to humor him. "Oh? And what's that, Captain?"
"I promised to help you find something you love, right? So let's go do it. Right now."
"Right now?"
Oikawa, composed and model-like as ever, takes my hand and looks into my eyes. "Lil-chan, will you go on a date with me?"
I blush despite myself and look away, any thoughts of where he wants to go and why it has to be right now blown out of my head. "I guess so."
He shakes my arm. "You mean, 'Yes, Oikawa-senpai, I would love nothing more than to go on a date with you!'"
I glare at him. "I'm not saying that."
"Fine," he pouts for a second before grinning again. "To the tennis courts!" He starts pulling me down a pathway.
"The tennis courts? But I don't have my tennis stuff," I inform him.
"Oh," Oikawa stops and switches directions. "To your house! And then to the tennis courts!"
\My racquet somehow feels foreign in my hands. It's been months since I last held it. I spin it a few times until its weight feels natural again.
"Can I wear this?"
I turn to see Oikawa pulling an extra visor out of my tennis bag.
I shrug. "Sure."
He settles the visor over his hair and straps it tight around his head. "Thanks, Lil-chan."
My heart does a flip. Somehow the visor makes him even more attractive. It doesn't help when he takes my extra racquet and does a few practice swings. He looks adorable.
"And I can use this racquet, right?" He asks.
"Yeah, uh, of course," I force the words out of my throat.
Oikawa points the racquet at me with a challenge. "Then, let's do this. Teach me how to play a match."
I feel more and more comfortable as we play. My racquet is an extension of my arm and the ball is locked into my vision. I've missed this.
Oikawa makes for a good opponent, too. His strokes are sloppy, but he makes up for it with his athletic ability and his sense of the space on court. He gets to almost every ball I send over the net and he knows how to maneuver himself to make the best use of both our positions.
It isn't long before I'm sweating, and I'm completely wiped by the time I beat him. Straight sets. 6-1, 6-2.
Oikawa slumps down next to me on the bench, breathing hard. "Nice job, Lil-chan."
I breathe out a laugh. "I'm really out of practice. I haven't played a match since I joined the volleyball club."
He looks up at me with surprise. "Really? Not even once?"
I shake my head. "I've been too busy with my responsibilities as manager."
He continues to stare at me, and I hurry to clarify. "I'm not complaining! I'm super happy about all I got to do as manager."
"I know, Lil-chan. How did it feel to play tennis again?"
I look down at my racquet. It spins in my hand, almost on its own. The feel of the handle is natural again. It feels like it has always been there.
