"Uh, sure," I glance around the group of boys, confused. "Wait, were you all waiting here for me? That's kind of creepy, guys," I joke, trying to shake off whatever is making me feel nervous.
"You need to be nicer to Oikawa-san!" Yuda explodes.
I stare at him, trying to process. I quickly check over my shoulder to see if Oikawa heard Yuda's outburst, but he is nearly at the end of the road now. "Excuse me?"
"What Yudacchi means to say," Matsukawa takes over, "is that we feel like the relationship between our team manager and our captain could be better."
"You two obviously don't get along," Hanamaki folds his arms. "And it's adding unnecessary tension to the team."
Oh no. This is my worst nightmare. They're going to kick me off the team.
Iwaizumi must sense my mood, because he takes a couple steps forward and lays a hand on my arm. "Don't worry, we're not telling you to leave. Other than this, you've been an incredible manager. Right, guys?"
The other boys nod and echo their reassurances. Except Yuda. Still, it soothes my fears, if only a little.
"Can I give my perspective? Okay." I mentally gather myself. Iwa gestures for me to go ahead and I take a breath. "First of all, thank you for feeling like you can come to me with your concerns. It means a lot that my upperclassmen consider it worth their time to help me be the best manager I can be. But honestly, I thought I was dealing with Oikawa-san pretty well," I frown.
Hanamaki's eyebrows shoot up. "You literally ignore him unless you absolutely can't."
"Well, yeah. If I don't, I would probably yell at him, and that would be worse." I look around at them for confirmation. "Right?"
"I know Oikawa can be a brat, but what is it exactly that you hate about him so much?" Matsukawa asks me.
I gawk at him. Does he really expect me to tell him? Oikawa is one of their closest friends, after all. I glance at Iwa, remembering how close I came to ranting about the volleyball captain to him a few days ago. "Iwaizumi-san... ?"
The spiky-haired vice-captain gives my arm a squeeze. "It's fine. I don't really care what you say about him. It's probably all true. We're just trying to help you come up with a solution."
I slowly nod. "Alright. For starters, he's a stuck-up pretty boy who can't get over himself."
Iwa snorts, as do most of the other guys. Yuda's expression darkens. Shido laughs and shakes his straight brown hair. "Man, it's refreshing to hear someone be so blunt about him. Especially a girl."
"And whenever he talks to me, his tone is condescending. Like he's patronizing me. Like I'm a little kid, and not an experienced athlete." There's no response to this besides Yuda looking like his pent up anger might blast him to the moon. But I'm gaining steam now. "He calls me stupid nicknames, making me sound like one of his fangirls, instead of respecting me." I take a deep breath to slow myself down. "Now. All that aside, Oikawa-san is a brilliant setter. He is a great team captain and the best person to lead our team. And I know that team chemistry is important to a team's success, and that includes the manager. But our personalities just clash. I'm not sure how I can fix that." I hate to end on such a hopeless note, but it's the truth.
The boys are silent, thinking over what I've said. Yuda opens his mouth, probably to yell at me, but Matsukawa lays a hand on his shoulder and shakes his head to silence him. I stay silent too.
