"You're sticking me with babysitting Oikawa?! I said the punishment had to be reasonable!"
Yuda scowls at me.
I ignore him. "Iwaizumi-san, please, I don't know how to handle him and his fangirl zombies," I bow, employing every possible tactic to encourage them to have mercy on me.
Iwa shrugs. "I think we can trust you to figure it out. I need a break from doing it myself. So Makki suggested that we make it your punishment from your last clinic."
I narrow my eyes at Hanamaki. "That's low, Makki-san."
The light-haired third-year manages to give me a smile that is somehow both innocent and evil.
"We should head back," Matsukawa peeks his head into the gym where the rest of the team is warming up.
"Wait!" I stop them from leaving me. "I'll do it. And I'll do my best. But first, tell me what's up with Oikawa and Karasuno's setter."
"Oh, right," Iwaizumi cringes. "Sorry about that, by the way."
"Yeah, a warning would have been nice," I huff, then glare at Matsukawa. "One that came way before I said something I shouldn't have."
Mattsun shrugs.
"So what's up? Does Oikawa have a problem with Kageyama?"
Iwaizumi frowns. "You could say that." He hesitates. "But I think it's less that he has a problem with Kageyama and more that he has a problem with himself."
My brows knit in confusion. "He has a problem with himself? What do you mean?"
Matsukawa leans back against the wall, arms folded over his chest. "Most of the guys here at Seijoh all went to the same middle school— Kitagawa Daiichi. We all played on the volleyball team there. Oikawa was our setter and team captain back then too."
"Oh, really?" Hearing this puts a smile on my face. No wonder the guys are so close. If they've been playing together for that long, it also makes sense that they work so well with each other.
"Yeah," Iwa nods his confirmation. "And Kageyama went there too."
I blink. "Wait, really? Wait, then... if all the guys from your middle school team came here to Aoba Johsai, then..."
"Why didn't Kageyama?" Hanamaki finishes for me.
I nod. If he didn't follow the team's footsteps and come to Aoba Johsai, then something horrible must have happened. Was there bullying? Or an accident?
"Well," Makki shrugs. "We don't know. I heard he wanted to play under Coach Ukai, who was coaching Karasuno for a time, but he retired."
"Oh," I straighten. "That's reasonable." I would also break from the pack if there was a coach I really wanted to play for. I'm glad it wasn't something as intense as I was imagining.
"I don't think Kageyama would have succeeded here anyway. Given that he didn't get along with his teammates. Kindaichi-kun and Kunimi-kun also have issues with him. Not just Oikawa-san," Yuda jumps in, shooting me a hard look out of the corner of his eye.
Or maybe it was too early for me to feel relieved. "Oh... really?" Of course I noticed Kindaichi's animosity toward Kageyama and Shrimpy, but I thought it was a regular rivalry.
"When Kageyama started at Kitagawa Daiichi," Iwaizumi continues, "it was immediately obvious he was talented. Our coach played him at different positions to give him experience, but he told us that Kageyama would eventually be the team's setter. They called him a genius."
