It was now summer break, and instead of her usual intense routine of studying, violin lessons and extra schooling, Connie had some (still very limited and monitored) time to herself. She sat at home, alone as her parents where at work, she was working on her own manga she'd been planning for a while, after she just finished what she thought was one of her best drawings, she got a mysterious knock at the door, catching her off guard and stopping her from starting her next drawing. When she went to open the door she saw someone she didn't expect waiting for her.
"S-Steven!? You're back!?", Connie exclaimed, she couldn't believe her eyes, "yep! steven diamond universe has returned to earth!", he confidently replied, leaning on the wall, winking at her, he'd learnt this way of flirting from his father. Connie led him into the house, her parents won't be back home from work in a while, so she had nothing to worry about. Steven sat down on the soft couch and looked around, he looked down at the comic on the small table in front of the couch, the anime drawings resembled his mother slightly, before he could ask about it connie grabbed it and pulled it away from him, keeping it on her lap.
"So", Connie said, sitting down next to steven, "how was space? are your parents back?", "theyre not back yet, mum said they will be soon", Steven replied, still looking down at the comic connie was trying to hide from him. "So you're just alone in Beach City? Not even pearl is here with you!?", Connie sounded worried but steven brushed it off. "yeah, that's why I went here, but they'll be back soon, so there's nothing really to worry about!", he laid back in the couch, he didn't realise how much he missed simple earth stuff like couches before he got here, "besides my dad's got so much money just laying around so I can go to the big donut and not starve....well I don't really need food". "you don't?", Connie raised an eyebrow, Steven gulped, he didn't mean to reveal that piece of information.
"W-well, my gem is that big I don't really have any organs, so I don't digest really, all the stuff I need is in my gem", steven pulled up his shirt, showing the giant blue diamond in his chest, connie had seen it before but never got a proper look at it, steven was very embarrassed about it so she stopped asking him about it long ago, she looked closely at the blue diamond, seeing her reflection, she wanted to touch the gem but could see Steven was still a bit nervous about showing people it.
"So you don't even go the bathroom? But I've seen you eat what happens to the food?", she had a million questions, but she started off with the biggest one. "oh!, mum said the food is just turned into pure energy and there's no part I need to get rid off", he responded, thinking back to all the lessons blue and pearl used to give him on how his gem worked when he was younger. Steven pulled his shirt down and connie moved away from him, he put his hand over the cut In his shirt he made to reveal his gem, to make sure she wouldn't see it anymore, he feared she wouldn't see him as human after learning this.
"Speaking of your parents, how are they?", this time steven looked away and cringed, remembering all the stuff pearl said about his parents' relationship that he really shouldn't have heard. "....mum got a haircut and dad....kinda changed colour", he responded, still looking away. "HE WHAT-", Connie yelled, jumping off the couch, "HOW DID HE-", "he kinda died then came back", Steven answered, still quiet about it, "oh steven, I'm so sorry, was it like durgy? How did it happen?", "yellow diamond and mum got into a fight it was really bad, yellow went crazy trying to kill everyone, both my mum and her ended up fighting very deep underground in a kindergarten of some sort. Dad followed after trying to talk them down and yellow shot him for it. But dont worry mum was able to bring him back like right after, and now he's got cool powers!", Steven cheered up at the end, it caught connie off guard, "so he's a blue zombie now?", she asked, immediately regretting her word choice after,"yeah basically, I went through his hair and that's how I got back here!"
"So we can both go back to see them right now if we find that blue bird?", Connie asked, steven nodded, "but I'm not sure if they'll like that, mum and even yellow said they where worried about me on homeworld, they where scared because of white diamond, I think she might be mad at them because of me", Steven sounded worried, he looked out the window, he could see that familar blue bird he came out of when returning to earth, he remembered what happened with that crystal gem pearl, how she lost her voice and all her colours, it was so scary, he started to imagine it happening to his mother, his father and even pearl, it scared him so much, he started to tremble thinking about what could be happening now that he's gone.
"Are you ok?", Connie put her hand on Steven's, he quickly turned to look at her, "i-im sorry it's just, I'm scared about what white diamond could do- what if I'm not even there to see my parents say goodbye!? and I won't be strong enough to protect them I-", tears started to form in Steven's eyes, he tried to wipe them away but more and more kept coming, he lowered his head and covered his face, trying to stop his powers but it was no use, the whole house was covered in a dark blue aura of sadness.
Connie held him as now the both of them cried, "it's ok steven, you have so many powers, and your mum is so strong too! Maybe if we are able to fuse with her again, we have double her power since you also have her abilities, and then we can fight white diamond!", she was able to fight through his powers well. Steven looked up at connie, he remembered the story of chalcedony she told him and garnet and shook his head, wiping away some of his tears, the aura how now faded and connie was now longer effected by his powers, seeing her cry made him feel so guilty, he hated this power.
"White punished mum for fusion, that will put us more in danger", Connie moved her hand over Steven's once again, "if we disobey White's rules it will make her weaker, we will stop fearing her! She reminds me of my mom, with all her crazy rules, hanging out with you and your family, being able to break all those rules alone has made my life much better!". "I'm not sure that will work, ive seen what white diamond does she's really scary-", suddenly steven was interrupted by yelling outside, the two of them went to the window to look outside and saw another anti mayor dewey protest screaming about a blue godzilla and all the damages caused by it.
Steven looked at connie, his eyes wide and sweat running down his face, "b-blue godzilla?", he asked, already knowing the answer and regretting saying anything, "the giant blue dragon thing that terrorised beach city, people think its for some movie the mayor allowed the town to be used for without people knowing, didn't you say that monster was your mom?" Steven looked away from connie and back to the protests, he gulped, "yep, that was her", he replied, his voice cracking.
