Khaotung and First made their way back from the mall. After they ate, they decided it would be best to leave to talk. They walked inside the restaurant, greeted Firsts parents and walked up into their home. "I'll go lay Min down for a nap. You can sit down in my room already."
Now the time had come. Both boys sat next to each other and Khao tried to find the right words. "You don't have to be nervous. I will listen to you." First tried to calm Khaotung down. He took a deep breath and looked down at his hands. "First you know that my parents aren't alive anymore." First nodded. "Well the reason for that... I'm a little embarrassed, not because they were my parents... I love them, even tho they had their problems... But..." Khaotung started to stutter and First grabbed his hands. "Hey, it's okay. You're with me, you're safe." Khaotung nodded and tried to pull himself together to start again. "First... My parents were both severely addicted to drugs." First swallowed and tried to suppress the pity he felt at that moment. "It started after they had me. They had a fairly regular life before and they loved me. Oh god, they loved me..." First squeezed the other's hand a little tighter. The tears that were shining in Khaos eyes were reflected in Firsts eyes. "My father lost his job when I was about a year old and since then he's tried to get other jobs, but he's only ever gotten odd jobs. My mother couldn't go to work because she was mentally ill at the time. Her brother, my uncle, took his own life and my mother found him." "That's terrible." "It was, yes." Khao once again took a deep breath. "At some point my father found a job and met Sun there. He was almost part of the family, Uncle Sun. My family was doing better financially and we had enough to cover all expenses. I was five by now and saw my father less and less. My mother was behaving strangely. She was often very hyper or incredibly tired. There was no mediocrity for her anymore, only extremes. Now that I'm older, I understand that my mother was always stoned. My father was always out, hyped up to stay up all night. He became a dealer through Sun, which is where the sudden windfall came from. At some point, my parents had a big argument. I can still remember it clearly. My mother wanted to get clean for my sake and said my father should stop working with Sun. The manipulative asshole that Sun is came to our house and wanted to talk everything over with my parents, but after that everything got even worse. My parents lived in constant fear of Sun, which drove my father even further into drugs. My mother never managed to stay clean for more than a day and my early childhood was marked by watching my parents lying completely motionless on the floor or vomiting. At some point I reached the point where it was normal for me that no one could take care of me. As long as my parents were breathing, I was okay with them lying motionless on the floor." Khao looked over to First, who bit his lip harshly. "Why are you crying ?" Khao asked and wiped the boys tears from his face. "Because it's you. I don't want to imagine what you must've felt like back then. You were a child." First said, his voice shaking. "It's okay. I got through it and now I have you." First nodded and pulled Khao into a hug. "One day I came back from school. I was in the first grade and everyone thought I was the weirdest kid among the weird people. That day I saw my father lying on the floor. That was nothing new for me, the only strange thing was that my mother was sitting behind the entrance door as if in shock. I got scared, so I checked my father's breathing but... he wasn't breathing." Khaotung swallowed. "I screamed at my mother to do something... but she just kept saying everything would be fine. 'Pumpkin,' she kept saying... and eventually she fell asleep." "Was she..?" "Yes. a little later in the hospital." "Khaotung, I'm so sorry about all this." "Thank you, First.." There was a brief silence because the older man didn't dare say a word. "I was trying to find a cell phone at the time. We didn't have a house phone and my parents were always misplacing their phones. When I opened the kitchen door, I looked out through the window into the garden and saw Sun standing there. He was about to run away, but when he saw me he came to the window and knocked. He said he tried to call my parents but they didn't pick up and that would be the reason for him to be there." "You didn't believe him ?" "Not a single word. Sun had a key. He never gave it back. There was no reason for him to use the backdoor and leave through the garden." First nodded. Khao was right - that made no sense ! My parents were brought to the hospital, where they declared them as dead. They did a few tests, My dad died due to a heartattack and my mom did too. How is that possible ? They said it's probably due to their drug abuse but they found another drug in their blood. My parents used a lot, I admit that... But they certainly didn't use an anesthetic for animals." "That's what they found in their blood ?" Khaotung nodded. "Nobody believed me since I was a little kid. The kid of drug addicts." "What happened after your parents.. were gone ? Did they put you in forster care ?" "No. They wanted me to go with Sun. Luckily our neighbor intervened and made sure that I was allowed to stay with her. After a long back and forth, the court appointed her as my guardian. She was always like a grandmother to me, even before my parents died." "I am glad that you weren't alone anymore." Khao nodded again. "Shortly after, Sun was arrested for drug possession and was convicted for drug sales . He has apparently only recently been out." "Fuck.." The young boy nodded. "It feels good, talking this off my chest again. Only Satang knew about this." "Where is your grandma now Khao ?" "She moved to her daughter. She lives in Chiang Mai. I call and text her almost every day. She has my dog with her. I really miss them." "You're going to see them again, I am sure about this."
"First.." Khao began. "I want Sun to get the punishment he deserves. But as painful as it is, I know that will never happen. I want to try to put that part of my life behind me.. Would you do that with me?" First grabbed Khaos hand. "I would do anything for and with you."
