"Khaotung Thanawat Rattanakitpaisan I now call you as witness." said the judge and Khaotung slowly stood up. It was just after eleven in the morning, today was the first court hearing in the case against Kamon and Khaotung was the first witness to appear today. His heart was racing and Khaotung felt like he was going to throw up. He had taken the medication again that he had been taking before, because he had finally been back to see his doctor. He was now taking tranquilizers in case he felt worse again and finally got something for his nervous stomach. With every step it felt as if Khaotungs legs had gone numb. He sat down in the seat he had been assigned next to the judge and one of the police officers adjusted the microphone for him.
"Thank you very much..." said Khao and looked into the mass of people and at the front - Kamon. He was sitting there, still wounded, in a wheelchair, handcuffed. Next to him, a public defender. "Mister Rattanakitpaisan, please stand up." The judge said and Khao immediately did. "Mister Rattanakitpaisan, are you aware that you are giving evidence under oath? Every statement is documented and if there are any discrepancies or lies, you are committing a crime that will result in criminal proceedings. "Yes, I am aware of all that." replied Khaotung. "Are you aware that you have to speak loudly and clearly into the microphone, that the statement will be documented in writing and presented to the file and to all the lawyers involved?" "Yes, sir, I am aware of that." "And you hereby swear to tell the truth and nothing but the truth?" "Yes, sir, I swear to tell the truth and nothing but the truth." "You may sit down." Khao took a deep breath and looked over at his family, who smiled supportively at him. "Mister Rattanakitpaisan, is it true that you only recently met Mr. Kamon Kongchai Khamsaen?" "Yes." "And is it true that this happened under the circumstances of a crime committed by mister Khamsaen?" "Yes, that's correct." "And is it true that Mr. Khamsaen already knew you?" "Yes." Khaotung looked at the young woman, a lawyer who was here to represent both his parents and other victims of Kamon. "Mister Rattanakitpaisan, can you tell us what happened the day your parents died?" Khaotung swallowed. "Uhm.. Yes.. I umm.." Khaos voice broke and he apologized. "It's okay, take your time." she said sweetly and Khao nodded. The corners of his mouth turned down and even though he tried to fight the tears, he could barely hold them back.
"I came home that day..." "Where did you come from?" "From school..." "Okay, and what happened then?" "I um... I walked in through the big, white door and saw..." Khaotung breathed out and wiped his cheek with his hand. "I saw my father lying on the floor. My mother was sitting right next to him, talking to herself." "What did she say?" "I didn't understand." "Okay, and then?" "I shook my father and tried to wake him up, but he didn't respond, so I shouted at my mother that he wasn't breathing anymore and she looked at me... and..." Khao stopped again. "Sorry..." "No, no problem at all." said the lawyer and handed him tissues. "She kept saying 'it's all good Pumpkin, Mae is here...' and she repeated that at least ten times." "Pumpkin? Was that her nickname for you?" "Yes, that's what my parents always called me. I was born in October, that was the reason." "It's a cute nickname for a child who has received unconditional love." she emphasized and Khaotung nodded. "What happened then?" "I ran into the kitchen because there was a telephone there..." "And who did you see there?" "My... my uncle Sun. He ran through the garden but came back when he saw me and said he had forgotten the key..." "Did you believe him?" "No." "And do you believe him today?" Khaotung nodded. "Every single word."
🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙
"You call yourself Uncle Sun?" the lawyer asked the man who was now called as a witness. "Yes." "Uncle Sun, even though you are not related to mister Rattanakitpaisan?" "Not blood related, no." "What does that mean?" "I considered Khaotungs parents as my family, so I still consider Khaotung as my nephew today." "And how did you feel when the little boy saw you in the garden?" Sun thought for a moment and then took a deep breath. "terrible..." "Can you explain why?" "Because I wanted to cover up a murderer who killed my family and made Khaotung hate me." "Why did you cover him up?" She asked and Sun thought for a second and then sighed loudly. "His father had kept me from going down the wrong path in prison. He often helped me and I owed him something. When Kamons father died, Kamon went completely mad and went completely off the rails. Kamon had summoned me there that day to make me a suspect and when I realized that, I thought no one would believe me anyway. I thought I could protect Khaotung that way and that was the most important thing for me, even if it meant that he would hate me..." The lawyer nodded and looked up at Sun with pity. "You were aware of what you were taking on?" "Yes." "You covered for a murderer?" "Yes." "You served a sentence of fourteen and a half years for the murder of mister and misses Rattanakitpaisan?" "Yes, but it was not counted as murder because there were found drugs in both of their blood." "Drugs that, as it turns out, were injected by mister Khamsaen and against their will." she emphasized and Sun nodded.
🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙
"Arya, , can I call you Arya?" "Of course." "Arya, you are a police officer in the same station as your father, right?" "Exactly." "And did you know that your father, Officer Samkit, was in cahoots with mister Khamsaen?" "No." "When did you find out?" "About a week before the night we were attacked by Kamon and his men." "And how did you find out ?"
Arya took a deep breath, his voice seemed to tremble. "Sun told Khaotung the truth and... Khao then told me. He said he trusted me because I am in love with his best friend. I also believed Khaotung immediately and eventually did some research. My father has an office at home where he has files from closed cases. There I found significant differences in the files about mister Khamsaen..." The young woman nodded. "And why did you believe Khaotung immediately?" "Because my father... is not a particularly nice person." "Can you explain this further?" Again Arya breathed heavily and sharply in and out. "Well..." he began and looked down at his fingers. "My father was to blame for my mother being killed. He ignored threats and pursued a case, and the perpetrators carried out the threat and killed my mother on the twenty-fourth of september, twenty nineteen." "My sincere condolences." Arya gave her a quick smile, but the corners of his mouth dropped again shortly afterwards. "After that, he started drinking... And he badly mistreated my sister and me. He beat us, burned us, attacked us with knives..." "Where is your sister now?" "In therapy." "Because of the abuse?" "Yes. She tried to take her own life because of the trauma."
🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙🌙
"Now let us hear the last witness of the day." said the judge and a small woman entered the witness stand.
she looked like she was going to cry at any second. "Can you say your name loud and clear." "My name is Ploy Ployshompoo Khamsaen..." "Okay, misses Khamsaen, can you tell us what your relationship is to mister Khamsaen?" "I was his mother." "You were his mother ?" "I gave birth to him, but I don't like to call myself his mother." The young lawyer nodded. "And can you tell us when you last had contact with Mr. Khamsaen?" "About seven years ago." "And what was the last thing you talked about?" "That I would make sure he went to prison." "And why did you say that, misses Khamsaen?" She wiped away some tears before she looked up again and shocked the whole room. "Because he had my daughter raped and killed." she explained and burst into tears full of anger.
"The man I gave birth to. He had his blood-related sister raped and killed by his men, and all out of revenge. Because I broke off contact and said he was no longer my son." "How did you know it was Kamons people ?" "Because I received a letter, explaining everything." "Is it this letter over there ?" Everyone in the room turned to a policeman who was holding the letter in a bag in his hand. "Yes, that's the letter." "And what did this letter say?" "He explained to me in great detail what his men had done to my daughter. Finally, he said he would do it again if he got that much attention from me... and finally signed the letter with the words 'your son.' He told me that my Jai tried to contact him several times, wanted her big brother in her life.. And he.. did this.."
She turned to Kamon, who was sitting with his head down next to his defense attorney. "You filthy piece of shit, you tortured the only child I loved. You murdered my everything, just out of jealousy. You only have yourself to blame for the fact that I no longer see you as my child, after everything you've done, and yet I'm sitting here today and wish you had killed me instead of her." "Misses Khamsaen-" "I hate you, Kamon, and I wish I had never given birth to you!" "Silence in the room, the hearing is hereby over for today. Further hearings will take place tomorrow at nine o'clock. The jury and the witnesses and the victims are not permitted to discuss the progress of the case outside of these rooms." The judge banged his gavel on his desk and finally stood up to leave the courtroom.
