TYPE OF REPORT: Issue: Causes & Effects

Graffiti & Vandalism at School

Introduction

The aim of this review is to discuss the graffiti and vandalism occurring at our school by highlighting their causes and effects as well as making suggestions to overcome this issue.

Causes

According to some students, many were not raised to respect public property and space, as a direct result of good nurture. Hence, they do not deem graffiti and vandalism as inappropriate. Moreover, many students have adopted violent behavior shown in movies, since they might consider such actions to be 'cool' when portrayed in media. As a result, they now often act upon such beliefs.

Effects

It has been observed that students do not feel as comfortable and safe within the school premises due to the unkept and heavily vandalized environment. Thus, they pay less attention in class and are rather moody. Furthermore, more students engage in such acts of vandalism as they are encouraged to do so by fellow classmates. Consequently, they join in on the vandalism.

Recommendations

Overall, vandalism and graffiti at our school seem to be a rather prominent issue, which needs to be resolved. I would recommend shedding light on the negative effects of vandalism as well as passing down ethics and beliefs revolving around respecting public property. This way, more students will self-reflect before taking any action.
