October, 2003:

it was a week or two after the new nurses came into the ER.
we were even more short since abby decided to give med school a second shot.
today was luka's first day back, too.
luka was driving my car to the hospital today.
"i hope today is easy" he smiled
i let out a laugh
"it's halloween"
he shook his head "i forgot"
"blood, creeps and puke" i nodded
"how fun"

i walked into the ER and just as i thought, everything was a mess.
"oh my god" i smiled
"my nurses are back"
i wrapped chuny in a hug.
"can't say i missed this"
"well i missed you"
"we got 60 days instead of 90"
"60 days has felt like years to me" i sighed
"so, kovac is back?"
"yeah, he's doing great" i nodded, smiling
"hey, g, i need 5 of morphine for this freak" pratt shouted
i walked over to the drug lockup.
"right in the iv?"
"yeah"
i grabbed the syringe and the bag of saline, walking over to pratts mumbling patient.
"it's about time someone gave me something"
"this place is crap!"
"you did walk into a county hospital, sir"
"whatever" he scoffed
i pushed the medicine in the iv.
"gianna, we need you over here" frank shouted
i took a few steps over to the admit desk
"yes, frank?"
"she's for you"
there stood a young woman wearing scrubs.
"im sam taggart" she smiled
she stuck out her and and i shook it
"right, you're the new nurse for us right?"
"that's me" she nodded
"nice to meet you, sam"
"im gianna coletti" i smiled
"as you know im the charge nurse down here"
"everything's pretty straight forward down here too"
"we have the triage area and admit desk over here"
"and down the hall we have the drug lockup"
i riffled through my pocket
"you're experienced so i trust you with the key to the medication"
"thank you"
"no problem"
"just if you see any young nurses wearing white scrubs, don't give them that key"
"i had a new nurse give a guy too much haldol the other day"
"oh god"
"yeah" i sighed
"if you're all good, you can get to it" i smiled
"if you have any questions or whatever, i'm happy to help"
"thanks, gianna"
"glad to have you here, sam"

"you're with surgery, right?" i asked abby, who wore all dark blue scrubs.
"that's me" she smiled
"morris needs a consult"
she followed me down the hallway.
"are you mad at me, gianna?" she whispered before we went into the room
"no" i smiled
"i know as a nurse it must feel like i've turned on you"
"i'm proud of you, abby" i smiled
she raised an eyebrow "really?"
"you sound surprised"
"i mean, i'd probably be in the same position if i didn't love being a nurse so much"
i stopped before the exam door
"i wish you the best, abby" i smiled
"thank you"
"sometimes i'm not sure what you think about me" she laughed
i shook my head "you're my friend, i'd never be jealous"

"haven't seen you all day" luka smiled
god, it was already dark out.
"how's yours been going, anyway?"
"well, a mother lit herself on fire and morris missed a brain bleed"
"where have i been amongst all of this?"
"triaging"
he stepped closer to me and wrapped my in a hug.
"weaver was upset that i was back"
"why?"
"i didn't tell her"
"i told her you'd eventually be back"
"i know"
sam approached us and i pulled away from luka.
"sorry, i just thought i'd let you know that the foley kits in the trauma room need stocking"
"it's about time i put in an order anyways"
"thanks, sam"
she smiled before walking away.
"you like your new nurse?"
"i really like her" i smiled
"you're off in an hour?"
i nodded my head, i knew he was too.
"wanna clear the waiting room with me?"
"sure" i shrugged.
he opened the doors, standing in front of everyone.
"alright, everyone who needs to be seen, form a line in front of me" he shouted
the people did so.
and, this, is gonna take awhile.
i handed luka a fresh chart
"right to curtain three, sir"

a/n: i'm so sorry for the jump in time, i tried to backtrack and fix things, but there's still a little bit of a gap and rush with the timeline. most of the time writing along with these episodes, it's hard to gauge time and how much time goes on between every episode, so i've had to essentially 'guess'. please take it all with a grain of salt.. i guess from now on, it is safe to assume that luka and carter were in the congo for the majority of the summer (not just june and july, what i assumed). apparently, it's not only just october now, but the end of october.. sorry for the confusion, rush in time, or mistakes on my part. regardless, i hope you bare with me, and still enjoy! welcome sam!! i know she gets hated on a lot, but for the most part, i like her: ps.. thank you so much for 1k reads!! i love you all<33
