OUTSMARTED
Lana's POV
I thought I could win.
Little did I know, you were already many steps ahead of me.
Kiel was stubborn. He continues to act as though his life depends on being with Makenna and Naiah. Halos ayaw niya na ngang umuwi. Gumagawa siya ng mga dahilan para lang mapatagal dito. Maski ang paggugupit sa mga kuko ng mga ito bago matulog ay ginawa niya.
"Daddy, don't close the light pwis," Makenna mumbled when she saw Kiel reaching for the lampshade. She hugged her bunny stuffed toy and pouted.
"Okay, I won't. But why? Are you afraid of the dark?"
"Yes po. Monsters will come."
Hinawi ni Kiel ang buhok ni Makenna na tumatakip sa mukha nito. "You don't have to be scared anymore. Daddy's here to protect both of you from now on, my princesses."
"I love you daddy. Goodnight." Naiah smiled and even pulled Kiel's head for a kiss on the cheek.
Ginaya siya ni Makenna at inulit din ang sinabi nito. "Night night, daddy!"
Kiel had a beaming smile as he tucked the kids on the bed. Then he got up and put the nail cutter in the side drawer. Tumalikod na ako at lumabas ng kwarto ngunit napansin kong hindi pa rin siya nalabas kaya nilingon ko ulit siya. He was still standing beside the bed.
Lumapit ako sa kanya at nagulat nang mapansing may hawak hawak siyang papel. I quickly grabbed it from his hand and placed it back inside the drawer. Sinarado ko iyon at tinulak na siya palabas ng kwarto.
Kiel was shocked, but so was I.
"Was that...the cheque my mom gave to you?"
Hindi ako sumagot. Umiwas lang ako ng tingin sa kanya. My mind couldn't come up with any excuse.
"Bakit hindi mo ginamit?"
Think of anything, Lana! 'Wag kang manahimik lang diyan!
"Nilalaan ko para sa pagaaral ng kambal."
"Even if you spend half of it, it would still cover their education till college."
"Pera ko 'yon, Kiel. May karapatan akong gamitin kung kailan ko gusto."
His eyes remained on mine until he thankfully let go of it. Tumalikod na siya at hindi na nagtanong. Akala ko kukunin niya ang phone niyang china-charge niya ngunit nagtaka ako nang hindi niya ginawa iyon. He was staring at something else.
I followed his gaze and found its way to the picture frames below. Tadtad iyon ng mga litrato ng kambal mula noong baby pa sila hanggang sa latest birthday nila.
I felt guilty that he never got to spend a lot of special moments with them, and he never will.
"Gabi na. Hindi ka ba hinahanap ng girlfriend mo?"
