At the head physician's house...
Derek looked at the herbal porridge in front of him with half-closed eyes. His face turned dark as he remembered how bad it tasted. He didn't want to drink it again. Pretending to be asleep, he closed his eyes completely, even snoring a little.
Evelyn couldn't help but smile. She knew he was acting. Nonetheless, in her eyes, he was adorable while doing so, like a spoiled kid.
"Derek," she called out to him in a soft voice. "Wake up! You have to take your medicine."
He turned his back to her. "I don't want it. You drink it if you want to."
Evelyn could only shake her head. "Seriously? You don't want to get better and leave this place?"
Upon hearing her words, like a bow stretched out, Derek quickly sat up straight. "Give it to me," he said, extending both his hands before gulping the entire thing down. Soon, he wrinkled his brows and pouted. "Yuck, it tastes horrible."
"Eat this." Evelyn gave him a candy, which he swiftly put in his mouth, acting like a person who could drink water for the first time after spending three days in a desert.
"Thank you," he murmured, wiping his mouth.
Evelyn put the empty bowl on the tray. She hesitated for a while before turning on her heels, getting ready to go to the kitchen.
"Evelyn, wait!" Derek spoke up, preventing her from leaving.
She turned to him again. Her face showed a puzzled look.
"Do you have something to say to me?" He glanced deep into her eyes as if he were looking through her soul.
"No. Nothing." Evelyn hastily shook her head. "I'll get going."
"Evelyn!" Derek frowned. "Please tell me. I'm curious now. Don't do that to a poor patient like me."
"It's nothing. Literally." She sighed. Sensing that he didn't believe her, she opened her mouth to reveal her thoughts, although she found it difficult to do so. "It's been three days already. I just wanted to ask... whether that place... is recovering or not..." She lowered her eyes. "I..."
"I know," he cut her off. "Aren't you a noble lady? How can a noble lady look after another person? You've already done a lot for me. Thank you so much. But you can leave. I can take care of myself from now on."
He stood up and took the empty bowl from her hand. "I'll go and wash it myself."
Evelyn panicked and tried to stop him. "Derek... You... You misunderstood me!"
"No, it's fine." He huffed. "Just go, Evelyn!"
"I'm not going anywhere." She narrowed her eyes. "Whether you like it or not, I'll stay here until you recover completely."
"Why?" He held her shoulders. "Just why, Evelyn? One moment, you despise me, and the next second, you insist on being with me. Just why?"
Evelyn frowned. "Release me, Derek. It's just... It's not because I think of you as a nuisance. I genuinely care for you. I just wanted to make sure that you were recovering well."
Derek let go of her. "Really? That's it? Okay. I'm recovering well. Are you happy now?"
Evelyn felt guilty for no apparent reason. "Why are you upset?" She blurted out. "Did I do something wrong?"
She really thought she had done something wrong to anger him. They had gotten along well with each other during the past three days. But now, Derek was suddenly angry, and she couldn't understand why.
