The evening's cold breeze kissed the colorful petals of the graceful flower garden as it spread their fragrance throughout the entire area, adding beauty to the calm atmosphere. It was peaceful enough to make anyone feel at ease.
Evelyn loved being in the school flower garden. It strangely but undoubtedly made her feel relaxed. After a tiresome day filled with lessons, she could finally take a fresh breath. There was no one to disturb her. Not many students liked to be there. Even couples avoided that garden because it was located near the teachers' quarters. They didn't want to get into unnecessary trouble. They had so many other places to try instead of this single, lonely flower garden.
Hence, it was mostly isolated.
Sitting on a stone bench, Evelyn watched the setting sun with a smile on her face. The orange sun rays dropped on her glasses, making them shine.
"Is that Evelyn?" A familiar voice broke her peace.
Evelyn lazily averted her gaze to the person who spoke. Her eyes showed no interest in talking to him. Unwillingly, she opened her mouth and spat out, "What are you doing here?"
"Isn't this a public place?" Instead of answering her question, he asked back.
Evelyn rolled her eyes. She was clearly annoyed by his presence and his words. "Okay. I'll leave then."
With that, she stood up and turned to leave, but Derek hastily grabbed her wrist. "Don't go!"
"Release me," Evelyn snapped.
"No." Derek bit his bottom lip. He had no choice but to put his pride aside. "Please, Evelyn, listen to me. I want you to help me with something."
"What is it?" Evelyn shook his hand off her wrist and crossed her arms over her chest.
"Can you come with me to town to meet the head physician?"
"Why me?" Evelyn raised a brow.
Derek dropped his shoulders in distress. "Because you are Heidith's friend. Heidith is my friend. A friend's friend is a friend, right? So please come with me."
Evelyn scoffed, "Seriously? One time, you humiliated me in front of many people. Can't remember now?"
Derek shed a tear. "It's all in the past. Let's start a new chapter, Eve. I don't want to be your enemy."
Evelyn frowned. She reached out and touched his forehead. "Are you unwell? You're acting oddly today."
Her words made Derek sigh. "Yes, I am. But not in the way you think."
"What is it then?"
Derek hesitated. In fact, he hadn't told anyone about his condition, including Heidith. He was too ashamed to do so. But he didn't want to go meet the physician alone. When he asked Heidith to accompany him, he was ruthlessly turned down. Heidith was his only friend. Thus, Derek didn't know what to do.
He had finally made up his mind to go alone until he unexpectedly met Evelyn. He was delighted. He knew he had to make her go with him.
Derek avoided eye contact with her. "My... thing. It's red and swollen. The gypsy girl last week ruined my life." He clenched his teeth. "I won't spare that chick."
Evelyn laughed out loud, clapping her hands while shaking her head.
Derek's face dimmed. "Why are you laughing? I'm not telling a joke here."
Evelyn continued to laugh. She pinched his cheeks, making him gasp in pain.
"Hey, don't pinch my cheeks. It hurts," he groaned.
