Following the dog's lead, Zadhea arrived at the top of the tall mountain in no time. She turned her head back to glance at the old mansion below, which now looked like a tiny dot. It seemed as if she were reconsidering going back to ask the witch for another solution—a solution where she didn't have to sacrifice her own life.
In fact, it didn’t mean she was a coward when it came to dying. It was just that she felt things were happening too suddenly. A part of her told her she had to rethink her decision. Her heart was unhappy with her solution, but her brain told her it was the best choice. A sigh subconsciously escaped through the gap of her parted lips as her gaze shifted back to the area around her. Shivering, Zadhea reflexively hugged herself for warmth. Perhaps it was due to the cold atmosphere, or, although she wouldn’t admit it, because Zadhea was unwilling to give up her life in this magical world. Maybe that mere thought made her shudder.
The moment the dog fulfilled his task, without waiting for Zadhea to jump off the cliff, he turned around and left silently, not sparing a second glance at the pitiful girl nearby. Just like his master, he was cold-hearted and tough, appearing as lifeless as a log. His empty black eyes carried no emotion, no sympathy for Zadhea. To him, she was nothing but a victim, a pawn in his master's cruel game. He found nothing new about it. After all, the dark witch was a professional manipulator. She could make anyone dance to her tune. By feeding all this bad information to Zadhea, the witch wanted nothing but her life.
She wanted Zadhea to kill herself.
Zadhea was right about one thing: the dark witch wanted to use her to take revenge on Heidith. Zadhea was the perfect target because she was precious to Heidith. Actually, the word 'precious' wasn’t enough to describe how much she meant to him.
Unfortunately, Zadhea failed to see through the witch’s mind—or perhaps she couldn’t see how valuable she was in Heidith’s heart. Blinded by jealousy, she deliberately forgot how Heidith had treated her all this time. The misunderstanding caused by Stella made Zadhea distrust the prince completely.
After the dog left her alone, Zadhea moved near the cliff and sat dangerously close to the edge, looking at the endless scenery below. The tops of the trees looked like a green ocean, and the river, though long, appeared like a thin silver line. Although she couldn't see things clearly due to the foggy weather, Zadhea knew without a doubt that if she jumped off the cliff, finding her body would be impossible.
Zadhea felt her heart pounding, as if it were about to leap out of her chest. Even though she had confidently told the witch she wasn’t afraid of death, she was still a normal human being. When she realized how deep the slope was, Zadhea felt reluctant and regretful. She began trembling uncontrollably as a shiver spread across her lean body.
'Hold yourself', she encouraged her weak heart. 'It won’t be that painful.'
'Ha! What a joke! It won’t be painful?'
'So what if it’s painful? It will last for only a few minutes, okay? Just endure it for a few minutes...'
She repeatedly chanted encouraging words in her mind, but nothing seemed to convince her trembling body and heart.
'I’m doing this for my mother!' She played her final card. 'She sacrificed so much for me—her luxurious life, her friends, her family, everything! I’m doing this to repay her, though it’s nothing compared to what she did for me...'
At that moment, something flashed in her mind.
'What about my parents here?'
Zadhea let out a heavy sigh. Her heart ached as memories of her current life flashed through her mind, one after another.
