When he heard her name, Derek's face subconsciously broke into a wide smile. He shook his head, still smiling like an idiot. He wanted to stop it, but he couldn't control himself. With a red face, he picked up a wine glass and slowly drank from it, sip by sip. He even bit the rim of the wine glass as he closed his eyes; his ears also started to turn pink.
"Wait, are you blushing?" Gronald gasped, his eyes widening in shock. He clenched his hands under the table as he realized that he was correct: Derek was indeed in love with Evelyn.
Derek panicked and quickly shook his head, but his face turned redder, shattering his attempts to cover his emotions. "Sh-she..." he stuttered. "She's just my female escort."
"It's the first time I'm seeing you so nervous like this, dear prime minister's son," Gronald mocked him with a smirk, faintly shaking his head. "It's fine if you love her. It's not like she's my wife. I'm married to someone else, so no need to feel bad about me. Plus, we weren't a couple in the first place. She never had feelings for me. And I want to fully concentrate on my wife from now on, but... I want to make sure Evelyn is doing well because I believe it's my obligation."
Derek looked straight at Gronald, surprise and disbelief evident in his eyes. He couldn't believe Gronald would easily accept their relationship. He wanted to keep it a secret; however, Gronald's sharp, mature eyes could easily see through his soul.
"It took me just three days," he finally decided to open up to Gronald as Derek started explaining. "Within just three days, I could see a different version of her- to be precise, the real version! She was just pretending to be rude all this time. Behind that mask, I could see how sweet her soul is. She made me fall in love with her. I don't know how, when, or why. I don't even know the reason for liking her so much. She's in my mind all the time. I want to see and talk to her all the time. I know I've changed. I'm confused too, but... I love this confusion. I love the way I am now because I feel like I'm changing... for the better."
He sighed and continued, "Don't misunderstand me. Evelyn didn't try to change me. I mean, no one can change another person. You can say... I decided to change myself for our future. I want to be someone worthy of her."
Gronald was happy with his answer. He nodded as he listened. When Derek finished speaking, he said, "Very well. Then congratulations on your happy future. I'm not asking you to take care of her because I believe you'll do it. Tell her I'm not angry at her. I'm just happy that she found the best person for her."
"Thank you, Gronald." Derek smiled genuinely. "You are such a mature uncle."
"Uncle?" Gronald laughed, shaking his head.
"Tsk, noisy," Heidith hissed, wrinkling his forehead like an old man.
"Heidith! You!" Derek was rendered speechless at the sight of him. "Don't sleep on the table like that!"
Heidith was hugging a beer jug to his chest like it was the most precious treasure in the whole world, appearing like a professional drunkard. He pressed his cheek on the table, using it as his pillow. He embraced the beer jug tightly as if it were a modern fluffy teddy bear. It looked like he was ready to sleep as he closed his eyes, frowning at the noisy atmosphere.
Derek tried to shake his shoulder, but Stella came to their side right at that moment, as if she was waiting for the perfect opportunity to announce her arrival.
"Oh gosh! Is he drunk?" She ran to Heidith and side-hugged him. "Let me... let me take him to a guest room..."
"Don't touch me," Heidith whispered, trying to remove her hand from his shoulder. However, when his drowsy eyes fell on her face, they widened in shock. "Dhea..." he whispered in a low voice only she could hear.
