Zadhea pressed her back against the closed door, sitting on the floor with her knees hugged to her chest, listening as Evelyn's footsteps slowly faded away. Warm tears wet her knees as she silently cried, feeling an overwhelming loneliness, as though happiness had slipped far beyond her reach.
Suddenly, the image of a certain old fortune teller flashed in Zadhea's mind like a thunderbolt. She could almost hear the woman's voice ringing in her ears as she desperately covered them, closing her eyes and shaking her head. She didn't want to think about that night, but her body shuddered as the memory crept back in.
Flashback
Zadhea roamed around the carnival, searching for a warm shelter when her eyes fell on an enigmatic tent set apart from the ordinary ones of the nomads. It was already past midnight, yet the tent was still aglow with candlelight which struck her as strange. Curious, she poked her head inside to sneak a peek.
"Come on in," an old woman said, breaking the silence of the night.
Zadhea's cheeks flushed with embarrassment. She quickly apologized the old woman for her rude behaviour.
The woman wore a wide smile on her face as she remarked, "No need to apologize, princess. You're destined to be here. That's why you came to me."
A shiver ran down Zadhea's spine as she listened to the old woman's creepy voice. Her mind warned her to run away but she decided to ignore it, assuming that she was just overthinking.
"How do you know I'm a princess?" Zadhea questioned in a soft voice, not wanting to offend this weird grandma.
Instead of answering, the old woman burst out laughing, making Zadhea uncomfortable. She tried hard to appear nonchalant, although she was freaking out inwardly.
"I know everything. Literally everything. Because... You can say... I'm a fortune teller?" The woman chuckled.
Zadhea subconsciously clenched her hands. "Oh I see." She squeezed out a small smile.
"Princess, let me tell you something. Or... You can think of it as a warning too. It's up to you." The woman grinned, showing her four teeth.
"Don't ever forget that you are Mimosa, the villainess. Although you changed your name, it won't change your destiny."
"You're destined to be sad forever. You'll never find true happiness. Even if you catch a fleeting glimpse of joy, it will be short-lived."
"Now your eyes shine with joy, but very soon, they will be filled with tears."
Zadhea fury erupted. "Shut up," she roared, drawing the dagger from her gown pocket. "If you keep talking, I'll cut out your tongue."
She stormed out of the tent, but as she did, she heard the old woman's voice follow her, "You'll come back to me."
-Flashback ended
Zadhea tapped her cheeks to calm herself down. "No, no, no. I should stop thinking about it. I have to prove to her that she's wrong. Yes. I can't cry like a pathetic loser."
She stood up, got dressed, and left to attend her classes. She didn't forget to join Sully's band for practice.
"Zadie, look at this. I always forget to show you this," Apollo said as he showed her an iPhone. "I bought this when we went to that strange world."
"What's the use of it?" Cyrus wrinkled his forehead. "Why is it so important?"
It looked like a seamless blend of glass and metal. He found nothing special about that sleek, rectangular object.
