" Ma'am, could you please describe your daughter Dodie's general personality? ," Marcus asked with a soft compassionate smile.
Glory touched the scarf around her head almost instinctively as she sat in the witness seat. " My daughter is bright. She was always so smart. Sometimes she was too smart for her own good. She can be charming when she wants to be. And loving. When she loves someone it's intense. And she has a lot of energy."
" Has your daughter ever shown concern for others in the past or present, ma'am?"
Glory replied," Yes. Especially family. Dodie believes in taking care of family. And in Pennsylvania she often volunteered at a local soup kitchen. "
" Has your daughter ever been reckless in the past ? "
Glory lowered her eyes to where her feet rested on the floor below. She wanted to cross her fingers. She wanted to be anywhere else right now. Damn it. She felt sympathy for the families. The children. The dead man. But she was still a mother ! She was sick. She might be dying. She did not want her daughter to go to prison for years. She did not know what to do. " We have all been reckless at times. "
Marcus replied," That's not what I asked though, ma'am. Have you ever seen your daughter behave in a truly reckless fashion? "
Forgive me , she wanted to scream out loud. To the two mothers. To the two boys. To the dead man. To her daughter. Her son. Her husband. To Richard, her stepson.
" No ," she lied. " My daughter has never been reckless. She's a very careful person in life. "
" Do you think she would have deliberately left the scene of a hit and run , ma'am? "
Glory took a deep breath and lied ," No. She would never have run away. Unless she felt she had no choice in the matter."
Marcus asked gently," Ma'am, you're sick , aren't you? "
" Yes. I have cancer. Breast cancer. "
" I'm very sorry for that. Being sick as you are would you prefer that your daughter be by your side as you battle cancer or would you want her to be sent to prison for many years for a tragic accident? "
Glory blinked back tears as she stared at her daughter. Her only daughter. The one that she felt like she had failed all her life. She wished she had been a better mother to her.
" I'm her mother. I love my daughter. I know she loves me. Of course I would rather have her with me and the rest of our family. But I know that she also needs to take responsibility for her actions. "
