" For heaven's sake, Momma , go after him. Call him. Text him. Do something. "

Alfred felt panicked. The feeling had grew in his body as soon as Andrew had begun talking and it escalated when he walked out of the hospital room.

He was thirty seven years old. A teacher. Engaged to be married to the most wonderful intelligent and generous man he had ever met in his life. But the moment he saw Andrew Norland leaving his sister's hospital room he suddenly became a small child once more who was constantly wishing and praying for a father just like Andrew Norland to appear in his life.

( " Alfred, Dodie ," Glory had said with both excitement and a strangely unusual nervousness in her voice as she first introduced them to a tall handsome bookstore owner with a kind face and pensive grey eyes. " This is Andrew. Andrew Norland. He's.... He's my new friend. "

Andrew smiled almost shyly at them as he stood with his arm around her shoulders. " Nice to meet you both. Call me Drew. " )

His mouth felt dry and his head suddenly dizzy as he leaned forward on his walker to urge his mother once more," Go after him. Talk to him. Don't let him move back to the house. "

Glory did none of those things. She just continued to sit motionless by the bedside of her comatose daughter, holding her hand. " He said he needs alone time. " The words alone time sounded extremely bitter coming from her mouth. " So let him enjoy his alone time. "

" Momma ......."

But before he could even finish his sentence they both heard a moan surfacing from the bed where Dodie was currently.

Glory widened her dark eyes. " Dodie, Dorothy, are you okay, darling? Open your eyes and talk to me. Please. Momma is here for you. "

Alfred fell into silence although his eyes cut towards the now empty doorway that Andrew had left through just moments ago. He was a grown man. An adult. Why did he feel so abandoned?

His eyes went back to his sister's still unconscious form and a surge of hatred floated through his body. Hate for her. His sister.

He wished something he never had in his whole life. He wished that the woman had never been born. She was destroying so much. Too much.
