That afternoon DuBuis and the three kids arrived back home with a take out pizza and bread sticks to hear a heartbreaking sobbing coming from the living room.
DuBuis handed the food containers to Luci who looked as worried as Sol and Theodore. " You all take this to the kitchen. Grab some for an early dinner and head off to do homework, okay? "
As they reluctantly followed his stern instructions DuBuis quickly headed to the living room where he found Miracle still sleeping peacefully on the sofa while sucking her thumb and his husband by the large picture window in his wheelchair crying. He hurried over to him and dropped down to his knees before him.
" Hey , Genius, baby, what happened? Did you hear something about your father? Is there more news? "
His big dark brown hand reached up to stroke gently at Spencer's tear stained face. His own heart hurt to see the man he loved in such pain and trauma as he was.
Spencer shook his head. " The police there are imbeciles ! They don't care about my father. Or us. The people who love him and need him. They don't.... That sheriff person..... Richard said he thinks Dad got drunk and left us again. " His hands shook visibly as he pushed back his glasses on his face. " He , the sheriff imbecile , thinks my father actually got drunk and abandoned his own car , phone and wallet. Why would he actually do that? It makes no sense to me. It's not logical. Life has to be logical. In my life it has to be logical. What are the odds of him doing this, sweetheart? He didn't. I don't care what that man said. I don't care what my horrid grandmother said about his never going to see her. He's missing and they don't care. They think he's just an old drunk who abandoned me again. "
Spencer's words trailed off gradually as he fell back into sobbing in his husband's supporting arms.
DuBuis said tenderly," Shhh. It's okay, baby. Shhh. Andrew did not abandon you. He would never. He loves you. And Richard. And Glory. And the kids. He would never just leave. He didn't just leave years ago. He was forced away from you all by your mother. I know this. They'll find him. We'll find him. Even if we have to hire a private detective ourselves. "
Spencer kept crying even as he whispered," What if ..... he's dead ? What if he..... What if someone hurt him ? Robbed him ? Like in the store with me that day? What if he was carjacked or something and tried to fight them ? He's always talking about knowing how to box. Dad never backs down from anyone. "
" Shhh. Don't think like that. He's fine. We'll find him. Safe and alive and well. Shhh. '
As he gently rocked his husband like Spencer was as young and innocently vulnerable as the slumbering Miracle DuBuis began to pray to the God he hoped dearly was listening.
----------
Theodore, in his Barrington Academy uniform, peeked into the living room and saw his uncle crying in DuBuis's arms. He quickly moved back from the doorway and sank back against the wall of the hallway. He ran his hands over his face.
Luci and Sol came over to him , each sitting beside him.
Sol said quietly," Hey , Theo , boy , come grab some pizza. You need to eat something. "
Luci touched his shoulder gently. " Sol is right. Poppy Andrew will be okay. You have to keep the faith. Like Uncle D and Auntie Joy says. And Uncle Jasper. Let's go get some pizza. Then we can do homework or you can help me and Sol run lines for the play. "
" I can't take this. Alan was bad enough but at least he's alive. Uncle Spencer is right. What if he's dead ? What if I lose my grandfather? "
He began to cry the same heart-rending tears of his own uncle and Luci reached out to hold him tightly.
Sol pulled out his phone and dialed a phone number quickly.
After it rang a couple times it was picked up and he heard Alan Kendall say ," Yes ? "
Sol merely said," Theo needs you. "
He handed the phone to Theodore who while still sobbing took it.
Alan , in his hospital bed , was alarmed to hear his boyfriend crying. " Theodore, what's wrong? Please talk to me. Did the cops bully you again? "
Theodore murmured through his tears,"I love you. "
Alan said back," I love you too. Now tell me what happened. "
