" My head hurts. "
That was the first thing that Alfred said after waking up two hours later in the emergency room of St. Paul's to the relief of Gerald who was holding his hand tightly and Glory was gazing at her son with a worried expression as she talked to Spencer on the phone.
" He's awake now, thank goodness," she told her stepson over the phone as Gerald whispered to his fiance with a hoarse with great emotion voice," I suppose it is with the fall you took. You scared the most bloody hell out of me. You aged me years and I probably don't need that. "
Alfred looked up at him with his slightly bruised face and aching head. That wasn't the only thing to hurt. His hip..... " I'm sorry.... What happened.... I remember walking down the steps.....where am I? "
Gerald kissed him atop his head and closed his eyes in silent prayer of thank.
Glory was ending the conversation with a relieved Spencer and said," You fell , darling. Down the steps. Luckily Franco saw it and alerted us. Otherwise..... Anyway you've been out a while. The doctors have done X-rays. And a MRI. You have a minor concussion and your hip is badly bruised but not broken thank goodness. They want you to stay overnight at least once they get you a room upstairs. "
Alfred closed his eyes. He felt so stupid. As usual. Why did his body have to be this way? All the time. He couldn't even walk down the stairs, the damn stairs, like anyone else. Again he wondered what Gerald really saw in him.
" I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Gerald, Momma. "
Gerald kissed his mouth tenderly. " Hush. What are you apologizing for? It was an accident. I'm just glad it was not worse. The elevator will be fixed Monday I promise. Dawson will be home to let them in. Why didn't you call me to help you downstairs? "
Alfred didn't answer because he was too ashamed to say why. He had been afraid of looking weak in front of Gerald who was so strong and able-bodied. He didn't want the man to start realizing how much trouble he really was. Suddenly he began to cry and felt even worse. Even weaker.
Dodie was right. This was why Scott cheated on him. This was why Gerald would probably end it one day. He hated his body. He hated this illness. This thing he had been cursed with for years. Since birth. Fuck his life, he screamed within his head.
Gerald gently lifted him up so he could cradle him lovingly in his arms. " It's alright. You're fine. I love you. "
" I love you too," he sobbed as his stronger arm reached around Gerald tight.
Glory reached out to stroke her son's head , feeling helpless and desperately needing her husband right now.
