When you have feelings for your best friend.
You stared at your phone screen, fingers hovering over the keyboard as you contemplated what to say next. Heeseung's name flashed at the top of your chat, and though it was normal to message him daily, tonight felt different. You'd been best friends with him for as long as you could remember—since freshman year of high school. But lately, you found it harder and harder to push aside the feelings bubbling up inside you.
Feelings that weren't supposed to exist because Heeseung wasn't just your best friend. He was also taken.
His girlfriend, Katrina, was the kind of girl everyone wanted to be—gorgeous, popular, confident. The type of girl who could walk into any room and command attention, leaving everyone else in her shadow. Meanwhile, you were the dependable best friend. The girl who was always by his side, listening to his problems, offering support, and quietly, secretly... falling for him.
You let out a sigh and threw your phone onto your bed, deciding not to text him back just yet. What could you say that wouldn't sound bitter or desperate?
YOU: Hope you had fun with Katrina tonight! 😊
Even typing the words made you cringe.
Just as you were about to walk away, your phone buzzed again. You grabbed it and saw Heeseung's name pop up. This time, it wasn't a message. It was a call.
Your heart skipped a beat. It was almost midnight, way past the time you'd expect a call from him, especially if he was with Katrina.
"Hey," you answered, trying to sound casual despite the nerves fluttering in your chest. "What's up? Isn't it late?"
There was silence on the other end for a moment, and then you heard a heavy sigh.
"Can I come over?" His voice was soft, almost hesitant.
Your heart sank. You knew that tone too well. Heeseung only used it when something was seriously wrong.
"Yeah, of course," you said immediately.
Fifteen minutes later, there was a knock at your door. You opened it to find Heeseung standing there, looking utterly exhausted. His hair was slightly disheveled, and the usual brightness in his eyes was gone, replaced by something much darker—hurt, anger, maybe even sadness.
Without saying a word, he walked inside and collapsed onto your couch, running a hand through his hair in frustration. You quietly followed and sat beside him, waiting for him to speak first.
After a long, tense silence, he finally muttered, "It's over."
You blinked, taken aback by the sudden declaration. "What's over?"
Heeseung let out a bitter laugh. "Me and Katrina."
