Him as your enemy

You had just finished a long day at college, your brain fried from lectures and group projects. The sun had already dipped below the horizon, and now the streets were lit only by the dim glow of streetlights. You were mentally preparing yourself for the walk home, dreading the fact that you'd have to cross paths with the last person you wanted to see—Heeseung.

Of course, as fate would have it, you and Heeseung lived on the same street. You hated him, and it was no secret that he felt the same way about you. For as long as you could remember, he had a knack for getting under your skin. Whether it was his sarcastic remarks, his smug attitude, or how he always found something to tease you about, Heeseung seemed to take pleasure in making your life just a little more difficult. You'd been enemies since day one, and neither of you ever missed a chance to take a jab at the other.

As you exited the campus, you spotted him walking ahead, his tall figure unmistakable. You internally groaned, knowing you were going to have to share the same route once again. You considered hanging back, maybe walking slower, but you didn't want to give him the satisfaction of thinking you were avoiding him.

With a sigh, you picked up your pace, trying to ignore him as best as you could. But just as you were about to pass him, Heeseung glanced back and smirked. "Couldn't stay away, could you?" he teased, his voice dripping with mockery.

You rolled your eyes, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a response. "Please, I'd rather be anywhere else than near you," you shot back, quickening your pace.

Heeseung easily kept up, walking alongside you, his hands stuffed in his pockets as if this was all some kind of game to him. "Sure, that's why you always end up walking beside me. It's okay, I know you secretly enjoy my company."

You scoffed, trying to focus on the road ahead. "In your dreams."

The two of you continued bickering as you walked, though the lighthearted banter took a backseat as you turned onto a quieter, darker road. It was a shortcut, one that shaved a good ten minutes off your walk home, but it wasn't the safest route, especially at night. There were no houses here, just an empty lot and a few run-down buildings that had seen better days.

You tried to ignore the unsettling feeling in your gut as you noticed a group of men loitering near the entrance of one of the buildings. They looked like they'd been drinking, their loud laughter and slurred voices carrying in the night air. You swallowed hard, keeping your head down and hoping you could pass by without drawing attention.

Heeseung must have noticed your change in demeanor because he suddenly stopped teasing you. For once, he didn't have a smart remark or a sarcastic comment. He glanced at the men and then at you, his expression hardening.

You kept walking, your steps quickening as you heard the sound of one of the men whistling. Your heart pounded in your chest, the uncomfortable feeling of being watched sending chills down your spine.

"Hey, sweetheart!" one of them called out, followed by a chorus of laughter.
