"And where the hell is the supposed assistant?" His voice sliced through the air, sharp with irritation.
The crowded office seemed to hold its breath for a moment before a soft voice, barely above a whisper, answered nervously, "I’m here."
Jungkook froze for a brief second, his anger flaring even higher. The voice sounded oddly familiar, stirring something deep within him. His brows furrowed as he turned around, fully intending to tear into this late, careless assistant. But when his eyes landed on her, all the words he had prepared dissolved. Standing before him, looking just as shocked, was none other than Park Y/N—the woman he had hoped never to see again.
The last person he wanted in his life.
Her heart pounded wildly in her chest, and for a moment, the world seemed to tilt off its axis. She could hardly breathe as she stared at him, her mind scrambling to process the fact that he was here—Jungkook. The man she hadn't seen in five years, the man who had left behind nothing but a storm of chaos in her life, was now her boss.
How had it come to this?
Everything in her life had been going relatively well. She had a decent job, and after years of trying to move on, she was finally finding some semblance of peace. But fate, in its cruel and twisted way, had decided to bring him back—her past, her regret, her unfinished story.
---
Five Years Ago...
There had been a time when Y/N and Jungkook's lives were intertwined in the most unexpected way. What had started as an innocent friendship had quickly turned into something much more. They had been inseparable once—sharing dreams, hopes, and secrets late into the night. But things took a sharp turn when misunderstandings and betrayal shattered everything between them. Jungkook had left her behind, leaving her to pick up the broken pieces of their friendship—and whatever else was between them.
For years, she had worked hard to forget him, to push his memory to the back of her mind. She had buried the feelings, the hurt, and the questions that had lingered. But now, standing in front of him, it felt like none of that time had passed. The same emotions she thought she'd left behind resurfaced like an old wound torn open.
And the look in his eyes? Cold. Distant. This wasn’t the Jungkook she remembered. Gone was the boy with the easy smile and the mischievous glint in his eye. This man—her boss now—was cold, hardened by the years, with no hint of softness in his demeanor.
---
Present Day
Jungkook's jaw clenched as he forced himself to maintain his composure. The flood of memories threatened to overwhelm him, but he wasn’t about to let that happen. Not here, not now. He despised her. He had every reason to.
He hadn’t expected to ever cross paths with Y/N again. After everything that had happened, he had walked away from that chapter of his life, determined to never look back. But here she was, standing in his office, staring at him with wide eyes as if she couldn’t believe it either. And for a brief moment, he was thrown off balance. She looked different—more mature, more refined, but there was no mistaking those eyes. Those same eyes that had once made him feel something he could never quite explain.
Jungkook quickly masked his emotions, putting on the cold, CEO façade he had perfected over the years. He was here to work, not to rekindle old flames or dig up past dramas. "My office. Now." The words came out harshly, and without waiting for her response, he turned and walked toward his office, knowing she would follow.
---
Y/N's legs felt heavy as she trudged behind him, her mind spinning with a thousand questions. How was this possible? Out of all the companies, out of all the places in the world, how did she end up here, working for him? The universe surely had a dark sense of humor.
The office door closed behind her, and the silence in the room became almost unbearable. Jungkook didn’t sit. Instead, he stood behind his desk, arms crossed, glaring at her as if he could burn her with just a look.
"Where the hell have you been?" he demanded. His voice was filled with a cold anger that made her flinch. "You were supposed to be here an hour ago."
She swallowed hard, trying to find her voice. "I—I’m sorry, sir. I missed the first bus, and the traffic—"
"I don’t care about your excuses." His voice cut through her apology. "If you’re late again, you're fired. I won’t tolerate incompetence."
Her heart sank at the cold dismissal. It was like being slapped across the face, but she had to remain professional. She couldn’t afford to lose this job.
"Understood," she said quietly, barely managing to keep her composure.
Jungkook didn’t respond immediately. His eyes bored into hers for what felt like an eternity, as if he was trying to decide what to do with her. Finally, he turned away, grabbing some files from his desk. "I need the reports on Mr. Mark's accounts on my desk. Now."
Y/N nodded quickly, retrieving the necessary files and placing them on his desk with shaking hands. The tension in the room was suffocating. She was about to turn and leave when his voice stopped her in her tracks.
"Do you really think you can work here, after everything?" His words were low, but they carried the weight of all the unresolved history between them.
Y/N froze. Her mind flashed back to those painful moments—the arguments, the confusion, the heartbreak. She had never fully understood why things had gone so wrong between them. They had both made mistakes, said things they didn’t mean. But now wasn’t the time to relive those memories. Now wasn’t the time for closure.
"I don’t have a choice," she said softly, not meeting his gaze.
Jungkook’s lips curled into a smirk, but there was no humor in it. "We’ll see about that."
---
For Y/N, this was the beginning of what would be a battle between the past and the present. She had no idea how she would survive working under Jungkook—the man who had once been everything to her, and now, the man who seemed bent on making her life difficult.
But one thing was clear: their story wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.
---
