Jess's POV
Two months ago, I found myself drowning my sorrows in a dimly lit club. The ache in my chest was unbearable, stemming from another one of Mum's endless tirades. Once again, she'd compared me to Jungkook, her golden boy, her perfect son. No matter what I did, it was never enough. In her eyes, Jungkook was flawless, while I was the constant disappointment.
Tess and I shared a close bond, but Jungkook? That was another story. I don't think I ever truly liked him. He tried to play the role of a father figure after Dad left, but it only made me resent him more. Jungkook could never fill that void. Sure, there was a time in high school when things were different—when he was dating Y/N. Back then, he was kinder, more open, empathetic even. He supported me, showed up for my games, and for a moment, I believed we could be close. But after their breakup, he shut everyone out and returned to his cold, distant self.
Mum, desperate to mend his heart, poured all her energy into him, leaving little for Tess and me. Tess coped by avoiding relationships altogether, and Jungkook became a playboy, drowning himself in meaningless flings. Then Y/N returned to his life, and everything changed. He found his center in her, while I remained adrift.
I envied him. He was everything I could never be—charming, successful, adored. He had a wife who loved him, a mother who doted on him, and the respect of everyone around him. Me? I was just the forgotten shadow, the "other brother."
I tilted my glass, letting the burning liquid slide down my throat, scanning the room for a distraction. My gaze flickered over the crowd until it landed on Carlos. Jungkook's oldest friend. He sauntered toward me with his signature cocky grin.
"Jessie boy, long time," he said, slapping my back before settling onto the stool beside me. He ordered a drink, then turned to study me. "You look like shit. What's going on?"
"Same old," I replied with a shrug, trying to dismiss the storm brewing inside me.
Carlos smirked, lifting his glass. "You need to relax, man. Maybe find yourself some company tonight."
His eyes roved over the dance floor, and I followed his gaze. "What do you think of that blonde over there?" he asked, nodding toward a woman in a tight red dress.
"Not my type," I replied. "What about that redhead?" I pointed to a girl dancing with her friend.
Carlos chuckled. "They're alright, but I have someone else in mind. Someone I've wanted for years."
I raised a brow, intrigued. "Oh? Who's the lucky girl?"
His grin turned wolfish. "Y/N."
The name hit me like a slap. "Y/N? Jungkook's wife? You're joking."
He shook his head, his expression darkening. "She's perfect. Everything about her—her smile, her body, her soul. She was meant to be mine. Jungkook stole her from me, but I'll get her back."
I laughed uneasily, unsure if he was serious. "Good luck with that. She's not going anywhere."
Carlos leaned in, his voice low and menacing. "Don't underestimate me, Jess. I'm going to take her back. At Evie's birthday party, no less."
The sheer audacity of his words made me pause. "You're crazy. Jungkook's security is airtight."
He smirked. "I have people on the inside. I just need someone to help me. What do you say?"
The question lingered in the air. I hesitated, the weight of my resentment pressing down on me. Could I really betray my brother?
"What’s in it for me?" I finally asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
