Jungkook turned on the TV, and when it came on, our faces appeared on the screen. He had actually done it, and I was completely shocked. The presenter was saying something.
"A reliable source has revealed that Jeon Jungkook's marriage to Park Y/N is a complete sham. The little girl often seen with them is supposedly their daughter. It’s claimed Jungkook married her solely to gain access to his late father’s company. So, is their marriage truly based on love as they claim, or money as alleged? Rumors suggest the marriage is a contract where Y/N is paid to be his wife. Is there any truth to this, or is it just a baseless rumor? We await a statement from them to clarify the matter."
Photos of us and Evie flashed on the screen before the program switched to the next gossip segment, and Jungkook turned off the TV.
"What do we do now?" I asked him, worried.
"Mommy, what’s wrong?" Evie asked as she walked in, noticing our expressions. Thankfully, she hadn’t seen the news.
"It’s nothing, sweetheart," I said, lifting her. "Let’s go get ready for the day."
I took her to the bathroom, completed the routine, and we returned to the room to dress. As we approached, I heard shouting. Entering the room, I saw Jungkook’s mom.
"I told you that woman would be your downfall!" she yelled, glaring at me as soon as she noticed me.
"Mom, calm down," Tess and Jess urged.
"Mommy, who are they?" Evie asked curiously.
"Why couldn’t it be anyone else—anyone but her? She ruined you once, and now that you’re successful, she’s back to ruin you again!"
"Y/N has nothing to do with this, Mom," Jungkook said softly.
"She has everything to do with this!" his mom bellowed.
"Who’s this lady?" Evie asked, staring at her.
"Oh, the daughter," she sneered. "How do you even know she’s her mother—or that you’re the father? Women like her will say or do anything these days."
"That’s enough, Mom," Jungkook said, clearly struggling to keep calm.
"I’m just getting started," she snapped, her icy gaze fixed on me. Evie, still curious, kept asking why the woman disliked me.
"Tess, please take Evie out of here," Jungkook said, glaring at his mother.
"You shouldn’t treat Y/N with such kindness. You’ve done more than enough for her already. She’s nothing but your contract wife. Have you forgotten that?" His mom’s words hung in the air, and Evie looked at me, confused.
Tess tried to lead Evie away, but she refused to go. "Evie, it’s okay. Go with her," I said, but she shook her head.
"But the old lady will keep shouting at you," she said stubbornly.
"I won’t let her say anything to your mom again, okay? Just go with Tess," Jungkook reassured her, kissing her cheek. She reluctantly smiled and followed Tess.
His mom continued her tirade. I could only hope Evie wouldn’t dwell on the scene.
"What was that all about, Mom?" Jungkook asked, visibly angry once Evie was out of earshot.
"I should be asking you that! How did this news leak? How can you be sure she’s not behind it?" she accused.
"She didn’t do it, Mom," Jungkook replied firmly. "She would never."
"Open your eyes, Jungkook! She’s blinded you with her lies again."
"That’s not true, Mom," Jess interjected.
"Stay out of this! What do you know? If you marry someone like her, she’ll ruin you too, and I’ll throw you out of my house."
"I’ve been out of the house for years, Mom. You can’t keep trying to control every part of our lives. We’re adults now," Jess said, shaking his head.
"That doesn’t make you wise," she snapped.
"That’s enough," Jungkook said, his voice firm. "You’ve tried to control every aspect of our lives for too long. I won’t let you disrespect my wife and daughter like this. Whether you like it or not, Y/N is my wife."
"Wife?" She laughed bitterly. "She’s no wife; she’s a gold-digging cheat."
Anger flared within me. "You have no right to call me that when the term describes you perfectly," I snapped.
"You little—" She raised her hand to slap me, but Jungkook pulled me aside while Jess held her back.
"What is it about me that bothers you so much?" I demanded. "Do I remind you of yourself?"
"You could never be me," she hissed.
"Good thing—I’m not trying to be," I shot back.
"Why do you hate her so much?" Jungkook asked, his frustration evident. "You’ve never liked her, even when we dated in high school. Why?"
"Because she’s ordinary!" she exclaimed. "She didn’t even go to college! You should have married someone of high standing."
Her words stung deeply. "Now I see why he never married you," I retorted, watching her face pale.
"That’s not why!" she stammered. "He didn’t marry me because of her—his barren wife who couldn’t give him children!"
"So you were his mistress?" Jess asked, disgusted.
"He loved me!" she insisted.
"Using someone for their money doesn’t mean they love you. Maybe she loves me for real. Did that ever cross your mind?" Jungkook countered.
"She doesn’t! The child might not even be yours!" she yelled.
"I did a DNA test, Mom. Evie is my daughter," Jungkook said quietly.
"She probably forged the results!" she accused.
"For God’s sake, Mom, enough!" Jungkook shouted. "You knew she was pregnant and kept it from me? You made me believe lies about her. Why?"
"I wanted you to be successful," she muttered.
"At what cost?" Jungkook asked, his voice breaking. "I missed six years of my daughter’s life. You broke me when you didn’t need to."
His mother looked at him, defeated. Jess and I stayed silent as Jungkook gathered himself.
"Mom, I love you, but Y/N is my wife, and Evie is my daughter. Accept it or stay out of our lives," he declared firmly.
"You’ll regret this," she hissed, lunging at me. Jess and Jungkook restrained her.
"Get out of my house," Jungkook said coldly.
She glared at me one last time before storming out. As the door closed, Jungkook turned to me, his eyes filled with regret. "I’m sorry, Y/N," he murmured, pulling me into his arms.
