I became paranoid after seeing the text. Could he really come here? I nervously started biting my lip. Should we cancel the party and take her somewhere private? A knock on the door startled me out of my thoughts.
"Who's there?" I asked nervously.
"It's me, Tess." I let out a sigh of relief as Evie rushed to open the door. It was truly Tess.
"Y/N, what's wrong?" Jungkook asked, noticing my demeanor. I showed him my phone.
He sighed and locked eyes with me. "Nothing is going to happen, Y/N. The security will be tight, and we’ll keep her close to us at all times. I promise you, everything will be fine."
"I hope so, Jungkook. I really hope so," I said, leaning into him for a hug.
"Don't worry, love. Now go get ready for the princess's party," he said playfully, making me chuckle as I got up to start the day.
The party was in full swing, and so far, everything was going smoothly, but I couldn't stop worrying. My eyes kept scanning for anything or anyone out of place. The day wasn’t over yet. Evie appeared dressed in her purple ball gown, looking extraordinarily beautiful. I couldn’t help but admire the wonder Jungkook and I had created.
"She's so beautiful," Jungkook said as we admired her together.
We had invited kids from a foundation Jungkook supported, and it was heartwarming to see Evie interacting with them and enjoying herself. She got to dress up as everything she wanted, her cake was a pink castle, and there were colorful cupcakes with princess stickers. Photos were taken to capture the memories. Though I was immersed in the moment, I didn’t let my guard down. Nothing would happen to her, not on her birthday, not while we were watching.
As the party ended, guests began leaving. I felt relieved it had been a success. My parents and Jungkook’s mom and grandmother had come, which warmed my heart despite my parents' issues with Jungkook’s mom. I was surprised she attended but glad she did. I saw how happy it made Jungkook, even though he tried to hide it.
"Jungkook, my son, can I speak with you?" his mom said as we were discussing how wonderful the party had been.
"I'll be right back, Y/N," he said, giving me a quick kiss on the cheek before leaving with her.
I smiled and went to find Evie. Tess was carrying her, and they were chatting about dresses. Tess had made all of Evie’s outfits and grown quite close to her.
"Your daughter is amazing, Y/N. I'm blessed to have a niece like her," Tess said, smiling as she handed Evie to me.
"Thank you. I know she’s happy to have you too," I said, smiling as I held Evie.
Evie started playing with my hair and excitedly babbled about the rides and fun she’d had. I just smiled, grateful for her. I was thankful I hadn’t given up on her and that Jungkook and I had worked things out, raising her with love.
"So, you didn’t get tired after all that fun?" I teased, laughing.
"I’m tired now, but it was so fun. I played with all the kids!" she said, her excitement contagious.
"I love you, baby," I said, kissing her cheek.
"I love you too, Mommy. This was my best birthday ever. Daddy was here, and I had so much fun."
"I'm so glad you enjoyed it," I said as she hugged me tightly.
"Gosh, I’m jealous. Now I wish I had a kid," Tess joked, and Evie giggled.
"Don’t worry, Auntie Tess. I’m your baby too, and I love you," Evie said sweetly.
"Aww, I love you too, angel," Tess replied.
The joy I felt was overwhelming. I was so grateful for how everything had turned out. Jungkook came over, and Evie squealed, "Daddy!" She seemed to love saying it.
"Hey, princess. How are you?" Jungkook asked, twirling her around.
"I'm fine. My birthday is amazing!" she said.
"So are you, princess. I have a gift for you. Let’s check it out," Jungkook said, leading us to the garden.
There stood a live-in dollhouse, painted pink and filled with toys. Portraits of Elsa and Anna adorned the walls. It was perfect for her.
"Do you like it?" Jungkook asked, watching her reaction.
"Yes, Daddy! I love it!" she exclaimed, her smile wide.
"I'm glad you love it, princess," he said, twirling her as she giggled.
"This is the best birthday ever," she said happily. My heart swelled with love for her.
"There are still more wonderful days to come, sweetie," I said, smiling at her. My heart was full.
"I’d like to talk to you, Y/N," Jungkook’s mom said suddenly.
"I’m with my daughter. I don’t want to lose sight of her," I replied sternly.
"I’ll keep an eye on her," Tess offered, leaving me without an excuse.
We walked to a quieter spot, and I couldn’t stop wondering what she wanted to say. Or was she planning something?
"Your daughter is beautiful. She reminds me of Tess when she was little but still has your features," she began, making me smile. We were talking about Evie, after all.
"I know. She has Jungkook’s hair too," I said, imagining the two of them.
"I’m sorry for everything I’ve done and said to you, Y/N. I should’ve told Jungkook about the pregnancy, but I wanted a better life for him. I knew he’d leave everything for you. And honestly, you weren’t who I envisioned for him. But I’ve come to terms with it. My son loves you, and I respect that now. I want the best for him, and you are that. Please forgive me. I want us to have a happy family."
I listened, letting her words sink in. It was hard to ignore everything she had done—keeping the pregnancy a secret, making Jungkook think I cheated, and the harsh words. But I had let go of the past. Jungkook and I were together now, and that was all that mattered.
"It’s fine. I’d like for us to be a happy family too. I want Evie to know her family," I said sincerely.
"Thank you, Y/N," she said, smiling slightly.
I returned her smile, feeling a sense of closure. Everything seemed settled now. I was excited for what the future held for us as a family.
A text notification pulled me out of my thoughts.
"THE BIRTHDAY GIRL WOULDN'T LOOK SO PRETTY IN RED, WOULD SHE?"
Panic surged through me. I ran toward the garden, my heart racing. She had to be safe. She couldn’t be with him.
A little girl’s scream stopped me in my tracks. My worst fear unfolded before my eyes.
He was here.
And he had her.
