The next morning, I woke up in the tub, unsurprised. I cleaned up and dressed, grateful it was Sunday. I couldn't imagine facing Monday after the previous night.
I went to Evie's room and saw Tess helping her dress. I'd forgotten Tess was here. Did she hear us?
"Good morning, Mommy," Evie said, hugging me.
"Good morning, sweetie. How was your night?" I asked, stroking her hair.
"It was fun. What about yours?" she asked.
"It was fine," I lied.
"I thought I heard you and Jungkook arguing?" Tess asked.
"We just had a disagreement, that's all," I replied.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Tess asked.
"I'd rather not," I said, sighing.
"Okay. But when you're ready, I'm here. I know my brother can be difficult; you just have to be patient sometimes," she advised, and I nodded.
"So, I was thinking of taking Evie to my place for the week. Is that okay?" Tess asked.
"Evie, what do you think?" I asked. She nodded eagerly.
"Alright, then," I agreed. It was better this way-Evie wouldn't have to hear any more arguments.
I packed Evie's bag, hugged her goodbye, and they left. Alone, I sought comfort in food and headed downstairs. Passing the mini bar, I saw broken bottles, glass, Jungkook's suit, and bow tie scattered. Jungkook lay amid the mess, clutching a martini glass, a wreck.
I walked past him, made a sandwich and coffee, and returned to find him still asleep. Knowing I'd end up cleaning anyway, I grabbed his suit and bow tie, placing them on a stool, then began sweeping up the broken bottles. I returned the martini glass to the collection. As I removed the glass from his hand, he stirred.
"What are you doing here?" he asked groggily.
"Cleaning your mess," I replied sharply.
"I didn't ask you to," he said, rolling his eyes.
"You'd have made me do it anyway."
"I'm not arguing this early," he said.
"It's almost noon. We can argue now," I shot back.
"Why did you do that, Park?" he asked, tired.
"Why do you believe I did?" I countered.
"Carlos said so. He wouldn't lie," Jungkook said.
"But I would? You trust him over me?"
"What am I supposed to do? Trust you?" he asked, exasperated.
"Yes," I answered firmly.
"Give me one reason to," he demanded.
"Because I didn't do it. Why would I assault Carlos? He touched me. I only kicked him to escape," I explained.
Frustration flickered in his eyes. The doorbell rang. I opened it to find Carlos. Slamming the door, I turned away.
"Who was that?" Jungkook asked.
"Your liar friend," I spat. Carlos barged in, grabbing my hair.
"Let go of her," Jungkook ordered.
"Jungkook?" Carlos faltered.
"What do you want here, Carlos?" Jungkook demanded.
"I came to tell you to forgive her. Don't let me ruin your fake marriage," Carlos said smugly. "She made a stupid mistake."
"You liar! You assaulted me, and now you're blaming me?" I shouted, throwing a glass at him, missing.
Grabbing a bottle, I tried again. "Put it down, Park," Jungkook ordered, intercepting me.
"She's crazy, Jungkook. She attacked me," Carlos lied.
"You're the liar!" I yelled, trying to throw another.
"Calm down," Jungkook demanded, disarming me.
"Get out, Carlos!" Jungkook shouted. Carlos hesitated but left.
"Let me go," I demanded, but Jungkook held me close.
"You're not going anywhere, Park," he said firmly.
"Let me go," I repeated, exhausted.
"You're feisty today," he remarked softly.
"You've seen nothing, Jeon," I retorted.
"I believe you now," he said gently.
"Took you long enough," I muttered.
"I'm sorry," he said.
"For?" I pressed.
"For not trusting you, for believing him," he said, stroking my hair. "I'm sorry."
"I can't just forgive so easily," I said. "You didn't trust me. Do you know how disgusting I felt when he touched me? If he'd succeeded, would you have believed me then?"
"God, no. I'm sorry," he said earnestly. "I couldn't imagine he'd do that."
"But you thought I did," I countered.
"I was wrong. I'll work on it," he promised.
"You've been awful," I said, and he sighed, hugging me.
"I know. Manage me for now," he whispered.
"I have to clean this mess. Go bathe," I said, pushing him playfully. He laughed.
I cleaned, then made lunch. While cooking, his arms wrapped around me.
"Jungkook!" I yelped.
"I've missed hearing you say my name," he murmured.
"Maybe you'll hear it more," I teased, smiling.
"I'd like that," he said.
After lunch, he left, leaving me to process everything.
