Y/N's POV
I woke up the next morning, still sitting on the floor with Jungkook’s arm around me. Sighing, I remembered yesterday's events but smiled when I saw him. He had come back last night, cleaned my injury, and apologized. I hadn’t expected that, but it meant a lot to me. He also told me he didn’t hate me, and that gave me hope that maybe we could still build a family together. I just needed to get Evie to forgive us. I reminded myself to call my mom later and update her, since I had asked for her advice on how to tell them.
"Hey," Jungkook said, waking up.
"Good morning," I greeted, wanting to ask if he slept well but not bringing it up since none of us had.
"What do we do now?" He asked, gesturing toward the door.
"I don’t know," I answered, feeling down.
He stood up and pulled me along, knocking on Evie’s door, but we got no response. I tried too, but still nothing. It seemed she was still asleep.
"Let’s freshen up and come back later," he suggested, and I nodded.
After showering, I threw on a long black shirt. I stopped by Evie’s room, knocking and trying to open the door, but still got no answer. Deciding to make breakfast first, I headed to the kitchen, where Jungkook was making waffles. He seemed lost in thought, not noticing me.
"Hey," I said, standing beside him.
"Hey. Didn’t see you walk in," he replied, distracted.
"You seemed lost. What’s on your mind?" I asked, facing him.
"A lot of things... how to fix things with both of you, how to be a father, family issues, and work," he sighed.
I felt bad for him. He didn’t know how to be a father, never having grown up with one himself, and he probably had no idea what to do. And it was all my fault. He was also skipping work to be here.
"I’m sorry," I began sadly. "I should’ve tried harder to tell you. I shouldn’t have... I know you’re angry at me. You have every right to be. I never meant for this to happen. Even though I wanted you to feel the consequences of pushing me away, I’m sorry. It was selfish, and I regret it. I’m so sorry." Tears started to well up.
Jungkook took my hands and looked at me directly.
"It’s not your fault," he said. "I shouldn’t have treated you like that, and for that, I’m sorry. I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you and our child. Yes, I’m upset, but mostly with myself. It was my fault. I don’t hate you, Y/N. I told you I can never hate you. I’m not going to leave you. Why would you think that?"
"I don’t know... I..." It didn’t take long before I broke down again.
"Please, don’t cry," he said, pulling me into a hug, stroking my hair. "I can’t handle it if you cry."
I felt guilty. I was the one who caused him all this pain, and now he was stressing over me. I didn’t want him crying again. Seeing him break down was hard, but I appreciated him admitting his mistakes and wanting to fix things.
We finished making the waffles, and I plated Evie’s with whipped cream, strawberries, chocolate, and a milkshake. I hoped she would accept our apology.
"Let’s go give this to her," I said, picking up the plates.
"I’m here," Evie’s voice came from behind us.
"Evie," we both said in unison.
"Evie, I’m sorry. I should’ve told you. I’m really sorry."
"Why didn’t you tell me, mommy?" she asked, her voice full of sadness.
"I was scared," I admitted. "I didn’t want you to hate him or me. Our relationship was complicated, and I didn’t want you to think he didn’t want you in his life."
"Why didn’t you tell him?" she asked simply.
I paused, unable to bring myself to explain everything that had happened between us. I didn’t want her to hate him.
"I tried, but we never had the chance. We broke up and didn’t see each other until recently," I replied.
"And you got married. Why didn’t you tell him then?"
"We really didn’t talk then, and we weren’t close. I was planning to tell both of you before it got to this point."
"Why did you marry him? Did you even love him?" she asked, sounding like she was interrogating me.
I looked at Jungkook, unsure how to answer her. I wasn’t sure about the reasons anymore.
"Evie," Jungkook called softly, and she turned to him.
"Why did you break up? Was I a mistake?" she asked, tears forming in her eyes.
I hated that she thought she was unwanted.
"You were never a mistake, Evie," Jungkook said, his voice gentle.
"You didn’t plan on having me, right?" she asked, sobbing.
"I won’t say I planned for a child at eighteen, but Evie, I don’t regret having you. You are the best thing that’s ever happened to me. You’re not a mistake, and even if you were, you’re a beautiful mistake I wouldn’t change for the world. I love you, Evie." I told her, tears now of relief and joy.
"I love you too, mommy. I’m sorry for hurting you last night," she said, and we embraced.
I never thought I’d hear her say that again. We broke the hug, and she walked over to Jungkook.
"I love you too, Daddy," she said, and they hugged. A tear slid from Jungkook’s eye as he heard her call him that. Thank God everything went well in the end. I was so happy. There was no tension left between us now. We were whole, and he kept his promise to not leave or hate me. I knew it was time to open my heart to him. We deserved to be happy together as a family.
"Come here," they said, pulling me in, and we shared a family hug. There was nothing else I could ask for—my happiness was right here.
