The roar of the airplane engines drowned out nearly every other sound, a constant, bone-rattling reminder that this wasn't a plane made for passengers. The metal walls vibrated with each dip and shift of turbulence, forcing the three of them to clutch whatever they could just to stay steady. No seatbelts. No comforts. Just a promise: it would get them there—somehow.
Avery sat wedged beside JJ, her shoulder pressed against his, her fingers restless in her lap. They sat with their backs to the cold metal wall, the vibration thrumming through their spines. Her head leaned gently against his shoulder, the warmth of his body grounding her as the plane cut through a sky layered with clouds.
"JJ..." she murmured, the words catching like thorns in her throat. Her mom's confession from two nights ago still echoed in her mind, heavy and unresolved. She hadn't told him yet. Not all of it.
He hummed softly in response, not looking at her but clearly listening.
"My mom said some things the other night," she said slowly. "Stuff I think you should know."
JJ didn't move, but she felt the change in him. His posture stiffened almost imperceptibly. Still, he didn't say a word—just waited.
So she told him. Everything her mom had said about Luke. About him. About what she'd known when JJ was still just a kid.
JJ didn't speak. Not at first. He sat still, his jaw tense, his eyes fixed on some distant point beyond the walls of the plane. The words hit somewhere deep, a place he kept sealed off most days. But now, they cracked through.
His chest tightened—anger, confusion, that familiar sting of betrayal threading through him. She knew? She knew something was wrong in his house, and she still didn't do anything?
"I mean, it checks out," JJ finally said, voice low and guarded. "Your parents were mad at me for not protecting you. Maybe she's just projecting."
Avery frowned, pulling back slightly to get a look at him. "What? When did they say that?"
JJ gave a crooked smile, barely there. "How do you think I knew where to find you?"
She groaned, leaning her head back and hitting the wall with a soft thud. "My dad must've been so thrilled to see you there."
JJ let out a laugh—dry but real—and Avery couldn't help but join in. Their laughter was short-lived, flickering and fragile, but in the tension of the moment, it was something.
When the quiet settled again, Avery looked at him, her eyes catching his in a glance that lingered. "I think my mom secretly likes you."
A small smile tugged at JJ's lips. "Yeah... I kinda got the sense she didn't believe everything she was saying to me."
Avery sighed, running her hands down her face, pushing her hair back. "This is so messed up."
JJ nodded slowly, eyes unfocused as he stared ahead. "Did she tell you anything about your biological parents?"
